Re: Keeping Blue Leg Hermit Crab with shrimp

Probably will upgrade to 1 or 2 gal if I'm going to keep both, still filterless. Will feed sinking bottom feeder pellet or spirulina tablet. But not sure how well it will adapt to lower salinity.

Keeping Blue Leg Hermit Crab with shrimp

Has anyone here kept hermit crabs with their shrimps? These hermit crabs stay relatively small (~1 inch) and supposed to be able to adapt to brackish water. What would be a good size for a single crab & would it still need a filter?

Re: Keeping shrimp without macroalgae?

Bought it from another hobbyist. Not sure if it is a saltwater species but he managed to keep it alive and well.

Re: Keeping shrimp without macroalgae?

Third pic is from September when I got it. First pic I tried to add some fert, didn't work too well. Over half of the macro I got turned white or fragmented into tiny little pieces.

Keeping shrimp without macroalgae?

My chaeto is falling apart into tiny strands and won't stay in a ball. Some of it is turning white too and it's getting everywhere. Will shrimps/snails be fine without any plants or is there any way to save the chaeto?

Re: New MTS not moving much?

Found it on top of some macroalgae at 4 AM. Think it should be ok for now.

New MTS not moving much?

I managed to slowly acclimate a MTS from FW to about 1.010-1.011 over the last 2 weeks, it lived in 1.010 salinity for the entire second week. I kept in a jar with some macro but no substrate. It showed no problems. It ate bits of the dead macro and even gave birth to two baby snails. But since I mo...

Re: Is water change required for <1 gallon setups with snail?

Sounds good. For the acclimation do you raise the salinity each day by adding salt into the MTS water or drip brackish water?

Re: Is water change required for <1 gallon setups with snail?

I don't have any shrimps in there at the moment. Should I swap the nerite out for a MTS from my fw tank or no snail at all and cycle with fish food?

Re: Is water change required for <1 gallon setups with snail?

I added an onion nerite today since the lfs didn't have the horned ones. It it normal for them to stay completely still? It barely moved during the acclimation too. As for food should I add some Seachem Flourish to stimulate algae growth?

Is water change required for <1 gallon setups with snail?

I know that the shrimps themselves have very little bioload so water change isn't really needed. I'm thinking of adding a snail, probably a zebra horned nerite during the cycling to give my macroalgae some nutrient and eat the dead bits of macro. There is currently biofilm but no signs of brown alga...

White stuff on surface of water during cycling?

I found some white film on the surface of my jar. Is it sale from evaporation or maybe limescale? Or do I finally have biofilm? Currently only have macroalgae chaeto in there. Receives room light and sometimes direct sunlight by the window if weather is good.

How long can these shrimps live in a temporary setup?

I am currently about 4 weeks in to the cycling process for my 1/2 G. Had to remove and clean everything after contaminated sand (washed with tap water) killed all the shrimps. I am planning on adding a second batch once there is algae visible. I plan to acclimate and add one shrimp to the setup for ...

Re: Shrimp killed by trace amount of tap water?

I'm not sure. The tap water here is naturally soft and is generally safe to drink. Maybe the trace amounts of chloride or something else killed them. Since it's a 1/2 gal there's very little room for error.
