Re: Thorax color

Mine are all juvenile right now but I have some with that deep dark red color and some that are much pinker or even white. No clue what thats about. Everyone seems happy and healthy so I assume it's OK. Would love for Mustafa to chime in though.

Re: Cycle a tank with no light?

It's not necessarily that a light is needed for cycling but its more needed for growing beneficial algae/plants and creating a day/night cycle in the long term. You don't need much. I found a little 2 headed grow light that has an internal timer on Amazon for like $25-$40. I started it up at 8AM on ...

Re: Macroalgae Red-brown Growth

I can't answer your algae question but instead of worrying with topping off your tank with water due to evaporation, I would get a top for the bowl. If you can't find something that perfectly fits that bowl, you can go to a garden/hardware store and find plastic water collection plates used for pott...

Overkill.

Overkill in what way? Weeks 1-4 are the general cycle. Weeks 5-9 are just follow on feeding schedule considering algae takes a while to grow.

Re: New tank setup

Cycling the tank is super important but not all that hard considering the hardiness of this species. Here was my process recently for a new tank. Week 1: Set up tank. Add macroalgae. Add moss ball. Both ordered from Mustafa so they had some bacteria already growing on them. Add a pinch of Spirulina ...

Most Surprising Thing You Have Seen In Your Tank?

Just wondering what everyone's most surprising thing they have seen in their tank is? For me, it has been having at least one molt in the first week of shrimp being introduced (maybe 2) followed by how my Chaeto has started to see what looks like runners along/under the substrate after I broke it up...

Re: Help me choose a tank!

Go with the hex. While these shrimp are going to move around a bit, you'll want lots of spaces for them to hide and more ground area means more placement for rock.

Re: Lava rock help

I'd break that up... Like a lot. Then you can either aquascape it or just gently drop it in and let it fall naturally. This give more crevasses to hide in and looks more natural.

Re: Help please

I'm sorry that happened. Wash your substrate, plants, and other tank items in distilled water before you reuse it. Take like a quarter sized bit of substrate and your plants and wash those more gently so maybe you can hold onto some beneficial bacteria that you had before. Throw it all back in with ...

Re: Beast Mode snail

I've had about 3-4 do this at once. It's kinda neat. It's amazing how the little surface tension they need to stay up like that. I was able to add 3 more handfuls of lava rock to a 7in diameter tank with one holding on the entire time. The water displacement shoved the level up so high that the lid ...

Re: Lid on or off with LED Light?

And don't worry about the chaeto, it'll fill in as the tank gets established. I've been watching it since I put it in and I feel like it has grown but it's really hard to tell. In the first week, it had sent some offshoots towards the light and a little outwards. Now it seems to have taken on more ...

Re: Lid on or off with LED Light?

Here it is 48 hours after set up. I threw everything in on Sunday and on Tuesday this is what it looks like. I pulled off the gasket so I know there is some air transfer as it’s glass on glass and really shifty. Unfortunately I must have measured or misremembered the size of this jar and it’s only 1...

Re: Brackish Moss Ball Plant

As I understand it, its like most Marimo balls. Toss it in and let it soak up the sun. If you really want to see even growth and no brown spots, make sure it gets light on all sides and roll it over sometimes if the bottom is still dark. I just got mine too so I'm experimenting.

Re: Lid on or off with LED Light?

Smacks head Completely forgot that my substrate and lava rocks would take up some room in the tank. Just another question on that though (and yes, I know I'm overthinking things). Did you build little caves/underpasses from your rock to help provide those hidey holes or did you just plop the rocks ...
