Re: Gravel cleaner?

I’ve posted about a cloudy water issue that, I’ve since found out, was caused by the distilled water I used to set up my tank. The distilled water had a very high mineral content that precipitated out of solution and deposited a thick layer on the bottom of my tank. While it doesn’t seem to affect t...

Gravel cleaner?

I would like to clean the gravel in my tank, but don’t want to drain the tank to do it. I’ve seen gravel vacuums, but they are suited for larger tanks, not a two gallon tank. Their attachments are large and flow rates are higher than I need. Any experienced insights among this group? Thank you for y...

Re: Cloud layer?

I removed about 60% of the macro algae from my main tank and put it into my old 1 gallon tank. Hated to just toss it so set up the little tank just for the grass! If the snails get too populous in the main tank then I can move them to the little tank.

Cloud layer Update

I’d ordered snails and after a hot weather hold of several weeks they safely arrived. Wow, what a difference! Those little dudes are worth their weight in gold! Water clarity is back to normal in just a week of introducing them into the tank. The organic growth will take some time to control, but th...

Re: Cloud layers 2.0

At this point I’m convinced it’s a bacterial growth. My tank is near a window and we completely closed the blinds while gone on a three day weekend. Cloudiness cleared dramatically by the time we returned. Since then I’ve had the blinds opened just a crack and when I topped off the tank last night I...

Re: Cloud layer?

So, I think the cloud problem has resolved its self. Went on a three day trip and the only thing lighting my tank was the led light set on a timer for 12 hours of illumination. Usually have the blinds open in a nearby window to provide some indirect lighting for the macro algae, but not while I was ...

Re: New tank setup

Yes, I’ve been struggling with a cloudy water condition for several weeks now. Not feeding and my shrimp seem to be perfectly fine. Macro algae and moss balls are thriving. Water is consistently cloudy with a white precipitate covering the bottom. The last time I checked tank salinity it was 1.011. ...

Re: Cloud layer?

Any suggestions on adding distilled water then? I’ve been trying not to disturb the macro algae too much by slowly adding the distilled water. Maybe don’t worry about that and pour hard enough so the distilled water reaches the bottom of the tank? Take some brackish out of the tank, mix with distill...

Re: Cloud layer?

The cloud layer showed up again! It appears to be caused by the distilled water I was using to top off the tank level. After adding water yesterday the cloud showed up about an hour later and after thinking about it, it showed up the first time after using that jug of water. I’ve switched to a diffe...

Re: Cloud layer?

The cloud layer has settled to the floor of the tank. Looks like a light snow. The water column is still slightly cloudy, but slowly clearing. The shrimp don’t seem to care at all! They are busy doing their normal activities. I have no idea what happened to cause the cloud to develop. Just keep watc...
