Thank you, Vorteil. That's very helpful.

Yes, I forget that, in the wild, their water conditions change regularly.

Re: Help requested: salinity

Salt doesn't evaporate. As the water evaporates, the salt in the water remains the same amount, which increases the percentage of salt to water, i.e. the salinity goes up a little. When you add more RO water, there is no salt in it, which will then reduce the percentage of salt to water, i.e. the s...

Help requested: salinity

I'm very confused... I have a one-gallon tank. The lid has a hole for feeding, etc., so water evaporates. I have been topping it off with RO water per Petshrimp.com: Add RO or distilled water whenever the level of your tank drops by more than about 10%. You do not need to add any more salt because t...

Re: Switching tanks

The new tanks still needs to wait to be ready after setting it up, but you can accelerate things by moving the old substrate/decoration/plants etc. over to the new tank. You should be able to shorten the whole process down to maybe a week or so. Thank you, Mustafa! I moved the black lava and the mi...

Switching tanks

I just received my opae ula a few days ago. I love them! I'm not happy with my setup, a one-gallon jar. I don't like the way the curved glass distorts the shrimp. Also, I can't get a good angle with the lights. So, long story short, I want to buy a one-gallon tank with a light and lid. I'm open to s...

Petshrimp.com rocks

I just wanted to mention how impressed I was with all three shipments I received from supershrimp.com. I ordered all the basics for my tank setup first. Then I ordered snails and microalgae. Finally, I ordered opae ula. The two shipments with live creatures were so beautifully and securely packaged....

They're here!

I received my opae ula yesterday. I am utterly fascinated with them and could watch them swim all day. For the most part, they're pale, which I expected. At least one looks like it has a red saddle. They seem to be obsessed with the maidenhair algae that someone on another opae ula forum sent me. I ...

Snail and algae questions

I received my snails today. From time to time I see one or more climbing the walls, so I know they're alive and kicking, so to speak. :) I named them all Shelly. They're teeny. How big will they grow in a 1-gallon jar? The main website says that a tank is ready for shrimp when you see the first sign...

Fortunately, our apt. is bigger than a postage stamp. We're very lucky!

You probably wouldn't recognize Hell's Kitchen anymore. It's changed dramatically. :)

Re: Acclimation

When I get my shrimp (many weeks from now), how do I acclimate them to their jar? Do I just place the bag in the jar to bring them to the same temperature? Or do I need to drip acclimate them? I have the same question about snails. .. Bag in jar to bring to temp and then release. .. Thank you, slip...

Re: Too chilly for opae ula?

My opae ula jar is cycling, so I don't have any shrimp, yet. But I'm already worrying about their long-term well-being. Today it's 40-something degrees and we don't have any heat because it's so late in the season. (I'm wearing my heavy hoodie with the hood up.) I think the change of seasons, when ...

Re: This won't be my last stupid question...

Today I received my salt, microalgae, calcium pebbles, and black lava rock. I bought another gallon of RO water, too. This is my 1-gallon jar after adding the brackish water and all the other stuff. I piled most of the lava rocks against the back wall behind the fake plants. I wanted to leave a big ...
