I have a tank with lava rock only and the shrimp appear to be thriving. I also have another tank where I have brackish chaeto that I purchased on eBay. I like having the greenery in the tank but it is also one more thing to worry about.

I bought the same tank as you from Petco. I used regular distilled water (not remineralized) I purchased from the grocery store and mixed it with Instant Ocean to make the brackish water. I’m sorry to hear what happened to your shrimp. I had random deaths over the course of a week. I also got a test kit and everything was ok. I ended up changing the water and that is what fixed the problem for me.

I am also new to Opae Ula so I will try to answer one of your questions. I use a refractometer I purchased on Amazon to check on the salinity in my tank. I also purchased an Instant Ocean aquarium hydrometer from Petco but I prefer the refractometer.

I am new here and it was nice to read about your Opae ula success. Congrats. Interesting about the mossball. It never grew. I am thinking about getting one or two.
