Thank you, Shrimplythebest.
I was hoping that it's good algae. If I put some of the water and/or small lava rocks in the bigger jar, will that help the bigger jar to sprout algae?

Re: 3 Questions....
I had to travel into New Jersey, USA, a few days ago, so I stopped at "Beital's Aquariums" in Pearl River. It was not a shiny megastore like a PetSmart, but a bit messy. They must have had 60ish tanks at least, some huge, both freshwater and saltwater, with some very large fish. They had sharks ...

3 Questions....
1. I have a 2 gallon jar that I am waiting breathlessly to cycle and a 2 liter jar as a backup. The small one has brown spots on the glass. Are those the brown algae or diatoms so many have mentioned? I can't tell if there are any on the black lava. The greenish splotch on the lower left is just a ...

I have no experience in this, but to let you know, with the government shutdown, there is a lot of trouble with incoming foreign packages. Many are undeliverable and being destroyed. I'm guessing bottlenecks may be exist for outgoing packages, too. Then there is the whole ...

Re: Upgrading Tank
Hello, Flippers ,
I am interjecting for a moment.
I am hoping to cycle a 2 gallon glass jar that looks like it's from an old candy store. The slight haziness I attributed to the water turned out to be wrong. I changed all the water and the slight haziness continues, but a small jar I have next to ...

Re: All at sea over cycling!
Greetings, Mustafa :
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I do tend to overthink things and end up distrusting myself.
* Lava rocks removed and the lava gravel sifted out.
* Tank drained down to the aragonite (not "live" or I wouldn't have bought it).
* New water added 1:1 with the ocean water & distilled ...

Re: All at sea over cycling!
I'm wondering if there was some kind of contaminant in your rocks or substrate or water that may be causing the issue?
Not to my knowledge. The water isn't foggy like it was; it now has a slight haze. The musty smell has greatly diminished, though it smells somewhat briny, like a harbor. No algae ...

Hello and thank you for your reply. :smt006
Yes, I rinsed the aragonite three times with distilled water. I probably could have rinsed more, but did not. I also soaked the lava rock in water for a week while testing the jar for leaks, then rinsed them in distilled water. The soak was a good thing ...

Re: All at sea over cycling!
Bumping up so someone sees my plea.
I got a test kit ---
Ammonia = 4.0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 0
pH = 7.0
SpeeGee = 1.011
It's been a few days shy of 1 month. How do I convince good bacteria to move in? A clear film persists on the walls of the jar and top of the water. Water is still somewhat ...

Re: All at sea over cycling!
The water is very cloudy with a heavy film on the top. The smaller snail was falling apart, so I removed both.
I read where plants absorb ammonia and that the philodendron plant family can tolerate growing in water. So, I put a cutting of pothos some of the brackish water from the jar. After weeks ...

All at sea over cycling!
Greetings,
Since things have changed, I am re-writing my post:
I am attempting to cycle a 2 gallon jar since September 18th, but feel unsure of what I'm doing. I'm all at sea! Neither the nearby PetSmart nor PetCo know anything about brackish water and are unable to help.
