I don't think that this has been mentioned before, but recent application of pesticides inside your home can kill your shrimp. The lab next door to mine is used to raise crabs and other decapods and there is a large sign on the door stating that no pesticides be sprayed inside. They have had total l...

Best thing to do is buy from a reputable breeder who specializes in these species rather than a local fish store that just sells whatever the wholesaler sends them.

I've had hydra appear a few times in my fish aquaria. They have always disappeared after a couple weeks. I'd suggest backing off on feeding and being patient and they will likely go away on their own.

The hot water treatment sounds good though

Brackish water shrimp in Hawaii: ID?

I'm on the big island of Hawaii right now and have found some very interesting shrimp living in brackish ponds. They are mostly transparent with some black and white markings. Perfect camo for the lava and coral sand substrate here. The largest I have seen are about 2 inches long. Does anybody know ...

I wish I had the name of the stuff I got...I'll be back for the next meeting on the 18th, so I'll get the actual name. As it was explained to me (In simplistic terms) the clay soaks up excess nutrients, and these nutrients can be "unlocked" by plant roots. Seems to simple to me, but the w...

The only main difference between my aged water and newly conditoned water would be that the temperature of the aged water is very close to the tank temperature. I am concerned that my cold water is too cold and don't want to use any water that has passed through the water heater since it is more lik...

Each week when I do a 25% water change in my shrimp tank, I refill and I keep a 5 gallon bucket of dechlorinated water stored away for use the next week. This aged water seems to be less stressful on my shrimp than water conditioned immeidately before a water change. My shrimp do become more active ...

I use an aquaclear in a shrimp tank with great success, but you do have to put a sponge over the intake. I have found that a replacement sponge for a "Tetra Billi" works great to cover the intake of must smaller power filters. It costs about $3. For my 10 gallon shrimp tank, I am using the...

A cheap alternative for the bamboo shrimp that I have been using is powdered freeze dried brine shrimp. I buy large cans of it to feed cichlid fry and the end of the can is always full of powder. I mash it between my fingers and toss a tiny bit in. They go nuts for it and it is essentially free sinc...

They are one of the most common invasive freshwater species in the United States. I collect them from local streams and keep them in my fish tanks and they live quite happily, but you don't see them unless they happen to be buried right against the glass. Certainly, they do filter some water, but do...

Re: Question About Purchasing A Filter

Was I the only one freaked out by this? I keep my filters running all the time. :? Nope. It sounds nutty to me too. If you want to save some actual money on utility bills, turn your hot water heater down and wash your clothes on the cold setting. Or, if you bought a single compact fluorescent light...
