It's marine phytoplankton. I'm more concerned about just how alive these fridge cultures are.

I'll see if I can get a photo of the zoes. I believe I've sucked up around 150 of them. Too bad I don't have one of those microscope cameras.

Atyopsis moluccensis zoes

I lucked out in a major way. The other day I was at Petsmart and took a look at their Atyopsis moluccensis tank, and I noticed a rarity. There was a female loaded with eggs. How could I not take her home? Suddenly, less than a week after buying her, I have a nice big hatch. I was concerned it would ...

I've had vampires in different (very different) tanks for a year and I haven't seen a single female even develop a saddle.

Everything works in slow motion for these guys, I think.

Size isn't very helpful. Just watch them move and you have your answer.

My post-larvae were roughly 3-4 mm if that helps any.

Lots of things eat dead cyano. I don't know of anything that eats live cyano.

This thread will probably be toast soon, but I thought I'd mention that though filtration might not be absolutely necessary in a planted tank, water movement is still important. The organisms that are working for you, including the plants, need their food brought to them after all. Unfiltered may se...

I don't know... even a little baggie is a lot of water for those guys. I don't see how it can be more violent than being swept out to sea. And they aren't at a point where they're excreting waste yet. Temperature seems like the only concern to me.

My "failing" was probably that I didn't do any water changes. I did scatter some zeolite in the bottom of the tank to act as both surface area for bacteria and possible ammonia removal (no idea if it actually does that or if it's just snake oil). I've gotten mixed messages on whether water...

It occurred to me that if one were to mail newborn zoes, they would spend about as much time in transit as they need to sit in fresh water anyway before being moved to salt. Temperatures would be the only concern, depending on time of year. It sounds like you have some kind of magic environment for ...

You should probably research tank cycling to better understand the biological processing of ammonia. Products like that are a questionable and ultimately unnecessary fix.

Out of 100+ zoes it looks like I'm going to get about 5 post-larvae.

I think I need to refine my methods a little. :)
