Freshwater planaria can look like the ones in that picture. You can even get them mail order from biological supply houses, which supply them to high schools and colleges. It's amazing where you can find planaria... http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/misc/land_planarians.htm This species has been acciden...

Some months back, I caught a couple of my red cherries molting and mentioned it here. To me, it always looked like the shrimp was sneezing itself out of its old skin. It happens very quickly.

Reminds me of something I saw a few months back--an obviously frustrated shrimp folded her tail forward, grabbed the end of her poo with a claw, and yanked it out of her, claw over claw, like she was pulling out a cable. The poo wound up being almost as long as her body. I decided I'd better cut bac...

In case anyone's still curious, it seems that these flat little ramshorns belong to the genus Gyraulus, which has many species, a worldwide distribution, and a long fossil history, at least according to what I gathered from a Google search. Here is a source with an image and a little info: http://an...

Luminescence Disease Early Macrobrachium larval stages are susceptible to vibriosis caused by Vibrio harveyi. This disease is very common in hatcheries of both freshwater and marine shrimps. The unique clinical sign of this disease is the luminescence of infected larvae which can be observed at nigh...

used to have a short video clip of Palaemonetes mating, but alas, it is no more. From what I remember of the clip, the entire act takes one second from start to finish.

If you crush their little snail bodies it makes eating all the easier. True. I have also found out that snails can be trained. The cherries in my mini tank have been eating so much ramshorn escargot lately, that the remaining snails all drop to the bottom of the tank the moment my fingers...

Re: Feeding/food observation.
I lately have been stirring up substrates in my shrimp tanks from both removing excess gravel and to expose more mulm. Everytime I do this the shrimp get busy picking away at all the new "stuff". Actually I notice they seem to really go wild for it. I've recently noticed this happening wi...
