Re: My first crayfish breeding

I think the key to keeping large numbers of crayfish is to have a very large area, preferably with some depth, lots of hiding places/things to climb on to get away from each other. From the time they are very small, they don't seem to like touching each other. And of course they will fight over food...

Re: My first crayfish breeding

I'm not sure of the species, I picked them up from a roadside ditch in Reno county, Kansas. I'm on my 2nd litter now, and most of the new babies are about 1.5 inches long. I've been slowly transferring them to my turtle tank so it doesn't get too overcrowded. My big male died a few months ago shortl...

Re: My first crayfish breeding

Got some babies. The crayfish I moved to the 40 gallon, I've only seen one baby, not sure what happened there. But in my 120 gallon, I never even noticed a female with eggs, but now I got little babies all over.

My first crayfish breeding

These are a couple of wild crayfish I picked up in a roadside ditch in central Kansas. In the past, whenever I had multiple crayfish in a tank, they would eat each other and I always ended up with just 1. This is the first time I've kept them in a 120 gallon tank with no predators, so perhaps having...

Re: Ramblings from a Vernal Pool Geek

Here's the largest fairy shrimp I get in Kansas, Thamnocephalus platyurus, they usually get about 1 1/2 inches long. http://www.ksvp.org/images/fshrimp/Tplatyurusx800.jpg This is the most common fairy shrimp in terms of numbers I encounter in NE Kansas, Streptocephalus sealii, they are usually 1/2 i...

Re: Ramblings from a Vernal Pool Geek

I see the original poster mentioned Branchinecta gigas, the Giant Fairy Shrimp. Here's a photo my buddy Don took of one he caught in Colorado a few years back. Image

Re: Ramblings from a Vernal Pool Geek

The species pictured previously is Cyzicus setosa. This year I found a new species Leptestheria compleximanus. Here is what they look like. A little bit smaller, but longer, and instead of swimming with legs in front like the Cyzicus typically do, these swim with legs facing down. I still don't know...

Re: Ramblings from a Vernal Pool Geek

I noticed you don't have any clam shrimp on your list. Perhaps it is because I haven't posted in a while. This variety lives about 6 months and is also a filter feeder. The largest one I have seen so far is about 1/2 inch long. They are extremely entertaining once they start mating. Male http://www....

I sure hope they get a taste for pond snails. Those snails breed like crazy, every tank I have probably has over 100 each.

Most of what Ive read said that glass shrimp wont eat other creatures in your tank. I still have the same camera that will only autofocus, and out of the 50 pix I took of this shrimp eating a snail, this is the clearest. http://www.iturnrocks.com/images/inverts/aquatic/glassshrimp/shrimp_eat_snail.j...

How big is it and has it changed colors? The one pictured is about 1 inch long. The largest one is about 1.5 inches long. They seem to still be somewhat clear, although I am getting much better at seeing them fast when I look in the tank. This tank has been up and running for about 6 months. I star...

Shrimp do not need plants. In fact, many shrimp come from habitats where are no plants at all.

Kansas Freshwater Shrimp

While placing turtle traps, I collected 3 specimens of this curious creature from a Marais des Cygne River flood water pool in Miami County, KS on Sunday with a dipnet. Also netted were orangespotted sunfish, a black bullhead, gambusia, and lots of baby bluegills. I am keeping them in my 5 gallon ta...
