hmm. My cherry shrimps never go darting around like that. About 80-90% of them just sit and graze, and the rest float around swimming gently. Are Amanos really different in the behavior than the cherry shrimps?

I feed my cherry shrimps zucchinis every 1-2 weeks. I cut zucchinis into small 1 inch cubes, boil them, and drop a couple of pieces in the tank. After a few minutes, it's a cherry shrimp town hall meeting! Every single shrimps come out enjoy the feast. And that's how I counted all 23 shrimps in my t...

Thanks Neonshrimp, Shrimp&Snails. The hydras and whole lot of other critters came into my fishtank with the plants I bought from eBay. After I've put the plants in my fishtank, I soon discovered the hydras, damselfly nymphs, planarias, scuds, and copepods. Now I know better, any plants I buy go ...

Babies are born.

The baby cherry shrimps are hatching tonight. First saw two, then four, and then I lost count. I have four more berried females, and many more showing saddles. My 10 gallon aquarium will become pretty busy in a short while. :) http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g241/MoltenLava_2006/fishtank/shrimpbab...

Here in California, the "Public Health Goal" (PHG) for nitrates is 45ppm, which basically means that the State of California considers this level to be safe for human consumption. I did a quite bit of research since then. The federal EPA guidance for Nitrade contamination is 10ppm for bot...

Yeah.. I'm just glad that despite this not so optimal condition, my Cherry shrimps are thriving in my first ever fishtank. I have three berried females, and several other showing saddles on the back. Expecting lots of babies real soon. :-D

I've checked the City of Mountain View web site, and confirmed that Nitrate measurements is 17.8... Looks pretty bad. 260ppm Alkalinity, 269ppm hardness, 75ppm Calcium, 20ppm Magnesium, 48ppm Sodium, etc. I'm going to move to another city now.

How clean is your tap water?

Each time I tested the water of my shrimp tank, I get consistent results, trace amount of Nitrite, and between 10-20ppm of Nitrate. Today I got curious about the results that is the same all the time, and decided to test the tap water. Surprise, surprise, surprise. The water off the tap show the exa...

Ah, thanks for the clarification. So the air line is connected to the bottom of the sponge filter, and the rising air bubbles cause the water to be sucked in through the foam. Being a newbie and not having many friends with fishtank, I haven't seen such application. But it all makes sense now. Thank...

YuccaPatrol, Thanks for the explanation. Yes, what I bought is like a powerhead connected to sponge filter.. I have more stupid questions coming.. I thought air pumps are usually connected to the bubble bars or ornaments like treasure chests, used to push the air through the device. How do I use tha...

Newbie here, seeking sponge filter recommendation. Something seemingly as simple as buying a sponge filter can be a challenge for a newbie.. I went to a local pet store to get a sponge filter. Ended up buying a Marineland Penguin sponge filter. Well, it kinda works but there are two problems. It cre...

But I'm more curious what kind of digital cameras you have. The pictures you posted are one of the best fishtank pictures I've ever seen.

Hydra control

So I have these a couple of snails in my shrimp aquarium. They look like apple snails. I believe they are either Cana's or Brig's. I didn't appreciate their huge appetite in the beginning, but then I just realized that they might be devouring the Hydras in my tank. I have Hydra outbreak that I am st...

Holly molly. I think I found a couple of Coelenterata (Hydras) in the tank. http://naturalaquariums.com/inverts/hydra.html They look exactly like the ones in the first picture. One attached to Myno plant, and one attached on the rock. They are tiny, maybe 1-2mm long, but I'm afraid they will be harm...

Ok, since last week I have collected five more damselfly nymphs. Yes, six of them in total! I'll think twice before purchasing plants from eBay from now on.
