Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp
never tried to convert an existing fw setup to brackish before, seems like alot of work just to acclimate a few snails. as for plants, your right, there are NONE in their natural pools, some terrestrial grasses grown along the edges of some pools but for the most part its algae only. the algae that ...

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp
go for it Bill, they are alot easier than your sulawesi's..... i finally got my hand on a bunch of the metabataeus (larger carniverous species) and they are a blast to watch. they move very quickly and dart around and out from their hiding places to get food. they supposedly eat opae ula and the lar...

Re: Shrimp from Hawaii, Please help ID
they have been around much longer than the 90's. they have been sold as feeders since the early 80's at least. i still have a colony at my parents house from 1984. they are an invasive species here. Westwood, you can get them at any LFS in Hawaii as feeders.

Re: Can cherry shrimp naturally mutate into crystal red shrimp?
that really white for a RCS, that may be part of the answer to your stripped female. all my males are at least a light red hue. your male almost looks like a snowball shrimp. i to have RCS that occasionally exibit clear spots on the shell, but not as defined as yours, mine are more white/clear spots...

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp
they taste like salty escargo, but thats only because we used to cook them in salted water. they are only about 3/8 - 1/2" in size and you actually need to use a needle to pry them out with. i dont know many people that eat them anymore as its just a PITA to get them out of the shell.

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp
pipipi are not nerites, they just look like them and are marine surge zone grazers. i used to eat them as a kid (tons of work for small amount of meat). they are found on rocky shorelines around the islands right at the wave splash zone. the fukubonsai guys can use them only because the pools they g...

Re: Blue Pearl Shrimp
mine show the same variations in color. you have to keep them on a dark substrate to bring out the blue tint. they are very easy to keep and breed as readily as RCS. the red stripes are also evident in mine and are getting more pronounced with each generation. reminds me of tigers a little.

glad to see someone else rescuing opae ula from one of those death traps. i live in Honolulu and have seen the containers you got yours in. LFS sell them here for a buck each also. good start with your setup, but i would add or rearange your rocks to give them more shade/shadows. these guys dont see...

just be patient with them. as others have said they are extremely slow breeders. they dont require much maintenace as long as the tank was agreeable to them when first put in there and you dont let the salinity vary too much due to evaporation. very easy to keep versus say CRS or bees (I have to che...

its made in Japan, primarily for use as substrate for planted tanks. the ph lowering ability is a nice side effect. makes growing acidic water plants like tonias and some eriocoulans possible, and HC loves it. my water here is on the hard side and with the ADA soil the ph goes down to a nice 6.8 or ...

the babies do or at least they look like (so small its hard to tell), but the brown stuff grows on the rocks and gravel also and the adults are always picking at that. never seen them eat the fuzzy green algae though. good luck, once you get the tank conditions right, they will breed and be pretty l...
