I'm not saying it lit up the room :D but it was visible in a dark room from a few feet away. It was abbout as bright as one of those "glow-in-the-dark" toys.

I would assume others did as well, but no more died that night. Which is good, but leaves my curiosity unsatisfied.

glowing shrimp - firsthand report

It's fairly well-known that certain bacteria that grow on dead/dying crustaceans can cause luinescence. I purchased a fairly large number of "feeder" ghost shrimp (P. paludosus, from the look of them), expecting a high mortality. Well, I GOT a high mortality. Luckily, it seems to ha...

BG: The salmon thing - are you certain you're not referring to a learned behavior? EDIT: Oops, just skimmed your post. Anyway, such learned behaviors can be overcome, even in captivity. I have seen studies where even being approached by a predator (as in the case of a glass divider) increases the wa...

Yeah, for the most part, "re-release into the wild" is nothing more than a pipe dream. I guess I'm not making my point exactly clear - I'm not concerned with alienation , I'm concerned with the tropical fish industry being portrayed as a negative force in terms of conservation. It is an ex...

I totally agree the hobby would be the wrong target. But the hobby put a big target on its own chest with this fish. I would categorize the reaction from the hobby (particularly Practical Fishkeeping mag) as nothing short of hysteria when the first reports of a decline in numbers of the c.p.d. surfa...

Kind of off-topic, but I just want to assure everyone that the habitat of Celestichthys was not "destroyed." The original location is a mess, no doubt, but other locations were a virtual certainty, from the beginning. Celestichthys is one of those species that takes advantage of temporaril...

I've seen this before. Ghost shrimp can have white flesh, which means the shrimp is on its way out, but they can also have a white exoskeleton...and the jury's still out on that one for me. Such shrimp SEEM to die sooner that the "uncolored" ones, but it's usually a matter of weeks or mont...

I know the ingredients for Stress Coat - they're sodium thiosulfate, EDTA, and an aloe extract, all of which wil be harmless for your shrimp. But, it won't do a THING for any residual ammonia. It all comes down to chloramine. Where I live, we still don't use chloramine, so I use API's Tapa Water con...

Muritatic acid was most likely the culprit. If it was simple hardware store muriatic, it would contain some metallic impurites (which would, of course, be in their more dangerous reduced forms). Since it is a cleaning product, purity is not a priority. If you want something you can add to acidify wa...

This would be a good place for some clarification. I've seen cherry shrimp referred to as Neocaridina heteropoda v. "red" on other forums - is N. heteropoda a junior synonym of N. denticulata , or was N. denticulata ssp sinensis elevated to species level? Or, is there some contention as th...

raising newly-hatched ghost shrimp

Well, I can say with near-100% certainty that adult females will hunt/eat offspring. I moved two berried up females to a 2.5 gallon Lustar tank with a substrate of oak leaves and two small pieces of Jf for "cover." On Friday, one's eggs hatched. By the following afternoon, there were only ...

Just an update: Boy when you guys are right, you're RIGHT. After moving and settling in, and getting my cherries settled into their new home, I decided that I'd see what turning up the heat would do. I put a heater in their tank, adjusted it to 75F, and a week later, three females have berried up, a...

Just a word from the Killie people: Java moss is a great plant for fry tanks, and we, of all the "sects" of the aquarium hobby, have been in love with the stuff for decades. But, the sad truth seems to be, after many indepedent corraborations, that it is pretty poor as home for microorgani...
