Re: Anyone willing to lend me a snail?

I picked out all my hair algae about 1.5 years ago (I have a video up on youtube) and it hasn't come back. You have to get every piece! Then the macroalgae will out compete it if you are lucky.

Re: Moving House -- How to move shrimp?

I recently moved, and have moved tanks many times. This is the method I used. I take about half the water out of the tank and save it in a bucket. I put my corals in the bucket of water so no shrimp would get hurt if the corals shifted or fell when the water sloshed around in the car ride. Then I pu...

Re: First Tank

It's very common for new moms to drop many or all of their eggs. It can take them some practice to learn to carry the eggs. Don't worry, the next time they are berried they will do much better. I had several months without any berried again, then within about a week, I had at least 8 shrimp carrying...

Re: New Tank Questions: Advice welcomed!

It's been a little over a month and I'm finally seeing algae growth, however, it's (apparently) the only thing I can grow in all of my fish tanks which is hair algae. -Anyone have any advice for growing any other type of algae? -Will the hair algae be a danger to my shrimp when I receive them? Good...

Re: Marimo success

Thanks for the additional data JennyPenny! It would be great to see actual growth and reproduction though in addition to salinity data from various people with marimo balls. I have them in freshwater and they do reproduce and grow there...and in a *very* different way from my supershrimp mossballs ...

Re: Beginner-Can I put beach glass in my tank?

Glass is pretty inert (glass jars can even be sterilized for canning by boiling for 20 minutes). There should be no problem adding it to your tank after rinsing and boiling. I have a pretty snail shell a friend brought me from Australia. I boiled it and it's been fine in the tank for nearly a year n...

Re: How do I prepare lava rock to add to tank?

Yes, boiling rocks can explode. Usually they don't (I did for years until I leaned about this) but I don't think it's worth the risk. Cleaning thoroughly and leaving to dry in the sun should be good. I have a scrub brush that is just for this purpose.

Re: Redness of the opae ula

I agree with Varanus. Once I have a larger population, I will be conducting experiments to see if I can breed darker reds. I was able to purchase some h. rubra from a hobbyist who did not purchase from this site. Hers look just like the ones I bought from Mustafa. I hope to get some from a third or ...

Re: My Nano Tank Set Up Success Story

I am happy to hear the lid trick worked for you! I think it's fine to transfer your shrimp at this point, although your shrimp may drop her eggs. If this is one of her first clutches, however, that may happen regardless.

Re: Nanosphere 9

I bought 15 from Mustafa around Feb 2016, then I bought around 50 from Christine Ha in the fall (she has great shrimp YouTube videos and we live about 1 hour apart). I think I have had about 80 baby shrimp, but aside from Mustafa's original 15, I just guess as to the population.

Re: Marimo success

I would love to see a picture of your reproducing marimo. Mine are all pretty big, and I have had them over a year. Mine have not budded once, and I have bought them from two different sources. They are what I would consider big for a marimo. Since they are so slow growing, I thought the best way to...
