Re: Planted tank?!
My 1.5 gallon tank has no plants. I went completely basic. Aragonite sand, a lava rock, a sea fan and some sea shells. I started out with 20 shrimp about a year ago, and they've multiplied to about 50! But, here is an article on brackish water plants that you might find helpful. http://www.aquariadi...

Re: Some light reading on opae ula
Thank you for this article! I found this part particularly interesting: "What they're working on now is to figure out why they have never seen berried females in the ponds. They've seen pregnant females from other species of shrimp, but not the Halocaridina rubra - the `opae ula of pet store fa...

A shrimp net worked well for me. I bought one on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0049 ... UTF8&psc=1

Re: Acrylic or Plastic Tanks: Long-term use?
I would be more concerned about leaking. I had a beta fish acrylic 2 gallon tank and over time the silicone sealant sprung a leak. Not good! I have my shrimp in a 1.5 gallon glass container. It's solid glass, so it should never leak.

Re: Is there a trick to topping off tanks?
It seems like any time you disrupt the tank, you will get more activity from the shrimp. They should calm down in an hour or two. My rule of thumb is to top off the tank after you see about 10% evaporation. Only add distilled water, as the salt does not evaporate.

Re: Algae buildup on tank glass
I purchased a small foam paint brush. They're very inexpensive. I cleaned the inside glass of the tank with it and it worked very well at removing the algae build up on the glass.

Also, you can add a small amount of fish food to the tank to promote algae growth and help speed up the cycling process.

It will cycle without adding anything live. You may remove the tank lid so that some airborne spores are introduced into the tank. Or order some macro algae from this site. Keep the light on a 12 hour on/off cycle. Once you see algae growth, the tank should be cycled and ready for shrimp.

Re: Opae population limit in a 1 1/2 gallon bowl?
It looks like there is algae growth, so they could survive on algae alone. They might be happier and healthier with an occasional flake or pellet of food about once a month. They really don't need much at all. You should cover your tank to avoid evaporation also. I have a 1.5 gallon tank and started...

In a 1.5 gallon tank, I would start with 20 shrimp.

Re: Opae Ula life expectancy
This is an Opae Ula Life Cycle chart I have seen online. In my 1.5 gallon tank I now have several floating larvae (around 20) Plus a few berried females. This chart says the larvae stage lasts around 2 weeks and post larvae around 6 weeks until they become juveniles. With these shrimp living 20+ yea...

I feed my shrimp Ocean Nutrition Shrimp Wafers that I bought on Amazon. I give them only one pellet about once a month. It starts out floating on the surface of the water, but after around ten minutes, they find it and pull it down to the tank floor where they all go crazy talking turns feeding off ...

Re: New tank - Q about cycling and changing decor
I added 2 shrimp wafers to my 1.5 gallon tank and left the lid off inside my house for 24 hours, then I put the lid back on and placed it outside on my balcony in direct sunlight. After one week of being left outside in direct sunlight, I saw algae growth. Then after that, I added the shrimp.
