Re: Red Claw Crab
Congrats on your new acquisition. Is this crab mostly aquatic? What kind of food do you feed it? Obviously your crab molted, did you find an exoskeleton? Of my three crabs, two of them have nice vibrant colors, but one is somewhat smaller and not very colorful. I'm guessing that she has never molted...

:? *Any* website selling imported shrimp either uses the pseudoscientific names provided to them by their wholesaler or makes up "scientific" names on the fly. Well, that's interesting! As a hobbyist how do I know what species I'll be getting? Is there a web site that's good for shrimp I.D...

Some more updates and suggestions. Colorado Potato beetle larvae were seen to be eaten and with more variety in live food, or maybe an overabundance of it, no cat food pellets were even touched. I think I'm going to build an enclosure for them. I really don't think they need very much water at all. ...

Re: Life Cycle Completion in Brackish Ponds?
This thread got my wheels and gears turning. My question is, would it be possible for those coastal ponds to be introduced by tidal surge from say, a hurricane or maybe a tsunami? I've never been in any of those situations to see what they're like, but the videos on the news the last couple of years...

Sorry to hear your experiment failed. I was curious about the results. Sometimes when you have multiple tanks going, it's possible to miss a molt. But at least your shrimp is okay!

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp
I gotta give a vote for black sand. I think it would make the shrimp feel more at ease. Although some of the members here have posted pics of tanks w/ white sand and I must say they looked pretty nice!

I'm curious, if it was collected over a year ago, is that a recent picture? It sure looks small for 1 year old.

Re: Homemade aquarium
Thanks for all the links. I've built a couple of aquariums, but didn't have that info available. When I moved I had to get rid of them. Here's a little tip. If you're having the glass cut by a glass shop, be sure to use new glass for the sides and bottom. But you can save a few bucks by having the t...

Re: Celebes Jungle Crabs
Just another update on food offerings. Deer flies and horse flies seem to be good meals for them (minus a wing). Catapillars, both the hairy kind and not , are eaten. Aphids, I thought I heard the crabs saying "oh yeah baby". 3 grubs were put in, but one was missing when morning came. Ther...

Re: Malaya Larvae
I guess my point is that it's frustrating to keep wild caught speicies. If it's new, your on a learning curve. And I definately did the curve! Whats ironic is that I've changed my fishroom water change regime to accomodate fuzzy claws, but now I can't find any. I offered plenty of them in the past (...

Re: Malaya Larvae
I'm always on the lookout for new shrimp species. The sad thing is that, similar to the Malaya shrimp, the Sri Lanka dwarf shrimp has almost disappeared from the hobby (even in Germany) as people are chasing the "latest and greatest" shrimp on the block. It's hard to aquire new species whe...

Re: My garage setup for shrimp
If you have a lot of tanks, a space heater is a good investment. If your garage floor isn't isolated from the ground by another floor beneath( and it probably isn't), I would put any tanks/tubs that sit on the floor on top of styrofoam insulation. The ground will just soak up the heat. I don't know ...

Re: What shrimp is this?
Any time a fish or shrimp feels ill at ease in it's surroundings it's coloration will change. My understanding on this, is that coloration is used for communication. Squid and octopi really put on color shows. The brief time that you have a shrimp in another vessel is enough to stress it. Just tryin...

AV-50 HIGH VOLUME AIR PUMP You have to drill wet or the bit gets to hot and destroys it Thanks for all the info. The only crucial bit of advice that I can offer, earned by experience no less, is to have either a spare air pump of the same capacity( or make) on hand. Or enough parts on hand to rebui...

Re: My garage setup for shrimp
Definately a sweet set up!! Where did you find a hole saw for glass? I work with glass when I'm fixing one of my tanks or cutting a top for one of my tanks and the only glass drills I've come across were small in diameter. When you drilled the glass was it wet? Glass dust is VERY hazardous to your h...
