Re: Live Sand for substrate
Don't use it. Even if you rinse it, it will still be full of organic bits that will break down and pollute your tank. Buy some new, non-live aragonite and save yourself a real headache.

Re: Question for Owners with Older Tanks
I have two tanks, one is 3 years old and the other is 1 year old. Both tanks have tiny specks of green algae on the glass that do not obscure viewing. Water is crystal clear. I have never cleaned either tank, and I feed a tiny spirulina pellet about once a month if I remember to. The shrimp are happ...

Re: snails & a few other newb inquiries
The snails are burrowing snails and like to come out at night, so if the lights have been off for a while it makes sense you'd see them when you turn the light back on. Do you have a cover for your tank? A cover will help reduce evaporation and keep contaminants from fouling the water, which could b...

Re: New journey and questions
Brown algae usually makes its appearance before green algae. I think if your shrimp want to hide you should let them. It will make them happy, and you'll be able to see more when your 100 shrimp come.

Re: New Journey and questions
The brown stuff looks like diatoms to me, and the shrimp like it. They may be hiding and not moving because there is so much food in the tank from the diatoms. Is the tank covered? I don't think anything is necessarily wrong, just there are very few shrimp in proportion to the number of hiding place...

Re: Shrimp has spot on back/eggs?
Looks like she's growing some eggs! That's where the ovaries are located. When the "spot" gets bigger we refer to the shrimp as being "saddled."
ETA:Also could be food as DCH48 says. If it's eggs it will get bigger!

Re: New to aquariums
Should be good to go! Your snails are probably fine—they tend to burrow during the day. Look for them later at night and you may have more luck spotting them.

Re: Starting out / Mason Jar Tank
The jar size leaves little room for error, and tiny changes in the water parameters will have enormous effects. Arguably the slow cycle is even more important to provide tank stability in this instance. Definitely don't put wood or cholla in your tank. It will slowly decompose and crash the tank. I ...

Re: Water: What's Safe?
Distilled water is safe, just like RO water is safe. Bottled spring water is dubious. Do not use tap water or well water. Stick with the first two and your shrimp will be fine!

Re: Moving Shrimp?
A small strainer or even a small aquarium net would be better in my opinion. Net would be preferable if you have enough room to maneuver. I've had good results with the baster, though I did cut the tip to make the opening a bit larger so the shrimp didn't get hurt. Also used *very* gentle suction, ...
