Re: suitable tankmtes for the Opae Ula?

I wouldn't trust a Ghost shrimp not to attack floaters. They are voracious eaters that eat anything. I'm pretty sure Alphas would do the same thing.

Re: Water changes

Shrimp can also have white bands as part of their natural coloration. I have one Opae that does. If the band is right behind the head portion and looks like a depression, that can be bad. If it's further back or not depressed, it's just normal color and nothing to worry about. It's a known problem w...

Re: Water changes

I don't have a picture but the "ring of death" is when a shrimp has a thin white band around it's body right behind the head. It's an indication that the shrimp is having problems molting and can't get out of the old shell. It's actually a separation in the shell exposing the body within. ...

Re: Water changes

If you have healthy macroalgae and whatever other algae and biofilm might grow, it's possible to go extended periods without a nitrate buildup. My tank is over a year old now and the nitrates are zero. Having said that, a small water change like every 6 months or so wouldn't hurt. By small, I mean l...

Re: Suitable food to buy?

Personally I only feed freeze dried spirulina. I don't feed often. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nutrex-Hawaii-Pure-Hawaiian-Spirulina-Pacifica-Powder-5-Oz/184261427089?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 You can get Spirulina powder much cheaper than that. I got a package for...

Re: Hospital tank/cleaning dirty water

As long as you don't clean anything with untreated tap water, the water change should do the trick. Just don't let things dry out or the bacteria on them will die. Just don't overdo the cleaning and make sure you preserve as much of the biofilm on things as possible. Do you still just have the same ...

My tank now.

It a one gallon TopFin Excite that has been going for 13 months now. I started with 16 shrimp and I now have at least 35 of all different sizes. I didn't think the macro algae had grown much but I found a picture from when it was first set up and it has grown substantially and is still bright green ...

Re: No visible algae?

It could be from an increase in nutrients but it could also be due to the shrimp and snails eating the extra food instead of grazing on biofilm and algae as much as before thus giving it a chance to grow. It's probably a combination of the two.

Re: Macroalgae and some other questions

You couid do a partial water change with newly mixed distilled and sea salt. That would replenish exhausted minerals.

Re: Any concerns on inbreeding?

I have read that in the wild, Opae's from different islands will not interbreed. It's even been said that ones from different pools on the same island will not interbreed. How true this is I don't know but genetic diversity doesn't seem to be much of an issue. I too, have shrimp from Mustafa and ano...

Re: How to initially cycle your tank?

My tank has had sea fan in it from the beginning over a year ago now. It has not deteriorated at all and has posed no problems. If it is properly dried and sterilized, it's perfectly safe. I wouldn't go picking some up off a beach and using it but if it's been dried and treated and sold as aquarium ...

I would ask your question on a forum that is more open to discussion of freshwater invertebrates. This site has become almost exclusively focused on Opae'Ula.

Re: Copper in food?

It's a long ongoing debate. Some say the amount is not enough to be toxic to invertebrates, some say to avoid anything with added copper. This is mostly talking about invertebrates such as freshwater shrimp and snails. Personally, I try to avoid it as much as possible. Since these shrimp are so smal...
