Re: My Opae Ula Tank Introduction

They do seem to poop alot, but its super tiny poop. The fan is totally unnecessary for gas exchange. Remember these shrimp (arguably) "survive" in ecospheres. Since the bio load is so small from the shrimp, I suspect that is why we often see slow or little algae growth. "A watch pot n...

Small update

Yeah its def poo, I have seen it fall from shrimp (and I think snails too) Small update: I have my first casualty (or a really, REALLY lazy snail) I noticed that theres one snail thats always on the same rock, in the same spot. Its been like this for over a week. Upon close examination it looks like...

Re: My Opae Ula Tank Introduction

Im certainly not a seasoned opae ula vet yet but I have done a ton of back reading on this forum... I think you might be pleasantly surprised with how well you could get away with zero filtration, especially if you were to have some snails and a good balance of algae growth.

Re: Water quality and additives.

I think the general consensus when "topping off" with RO/distilled water is to NOT remineralize. (and certainly not add any new marine salt) If you are actually doing a full on water change then it would be RO/distilled water with the salt. Most people keep some sort of crushed coral etc i...

Re: New Opaeula Fan + Tank Setup

The "box" looks potentially great! How do you solve the air intake/exchange though? Drill a hole? I suddenly thought of something. You know those breather bags some LFS use to pack and transport fishes/shrimps? Those bags let oxygen in and CO2 out http://www.kordon.com/kordo...

if you press on the image with your mouse it shows the photos in full without the need for scrolling :-D Ha, I have to admit, I didnt know that! :D Unfortunately with a lower res browser window they are still cropped horizontally, but I personally make a dash for a PC pretty much any time I ...

Re: New Opaeula Fan + Tank Setup

Thanks for all the great info mcdaney! I have never seen the aqualighter products before, they look top notch. Also that glass cover you had made looks really slick. I had to download the pictures as they arnt resized and scrolling on them makes them very hard to view. I agree with your views on tan...

Re: New Opaeula Fan + Tank

Glad to have you here. Very nice low profile tank. Is it just me, only part of the tank is in my picture. I run into this all the time with this forum while using my phone or tablet (which is not my preference) This forum has some somewhat stubborn margins set on it when viewing at a lower res. (bu...

Re: New Opaeula Fan + Tank

I am a huge fan of the look of your tank – the shape, size, style and how you have put it together. It is very Iwagumi -like. I actually plan to do one of my boxes very similar to this eventually. When I asked about filtration I received feedback to skip it, and Im glad that I did. Q: Does your tank...

Re: My Opae Ula Tank Introduction

Wow you spared no expense for your Opae Ulas! Very nice! Those must be some happy shrimp :) Ive only had mine for about 2 weeks now too. They truly are fantastic shrimp to watch.

I am curious - what are those double ended bottle-like-looking things sitting on the substrate?

Re: I like the look of the ecosphere, but.....

Does anyone know if the light in this setup would be adequate? also, does anyone own this particular tank? If so, is the filter cord separate from the light unit? (so I can remove it altogether) Thanks again :) There is a reviewer on that product page that says that this does not work properly with...

Update - strange detritus?

I guess I meant updates wouldnt be as interesting. At any rate I do have an update, more of a question rather. After the weekend, I have noticed some very strange (and abundant) whitish... detritus I think it is? Theres TONS of it. It looks just like rice, just 100 times smaller. Its hard to see its...

Re: My 2 liter Opae Ula project(s)!

Thanks for the replies Ken and Mustafa. Not much new to report, shrimp are still a bit reclusive but pretty much all are red now. The snails are fairly active. If all goes well I guess I won't have much to update from here on out.. unless.. I start on the other boxes! :-)

Re: My 2 liter Opae Ula project(s)!

As far as supplementing I was referring to adding food / bio material, particularly for the snails to either eat directly or to grow (hopefully) algae. A minor update: The shrimps activity has greatly subdued, in fact they hardly move at all now. I have to search for them. In general I believe I do ...
