Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

I think the rate at which my nerite is producing waste suggests that it might still have plenty of nutrients in it.

Alternatively, they might just be exploring it because they haven't run into something like it before. Everything is new to them! They're like little Encino Men (dates self).

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Order submitted!

10 Supershrimp and 1 mossball. I figure I'll have it in there with the Marimo, and if the Marimo ends up looking a little shabby, I'll just switch it over to the the FW tank. The little EcoSpherians do seem to like it.

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Hi McDaney! Thanks for the warm welcome, and thanks to everyone else, too! I released my EcoSphere shrimp and they only swam around frantically for about 20 mins before settling down. They seem to be very interested in the snail poo? All 4 of them are now happily hanging out near Lyle's favorite poo...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

I have one nerite in each 1-gal aquarium right now, but I feel like one nerite shared between both would have been better. Despite that alarming amount of poo, there is still 0 ammonia, which makes me feel a little better about the establishment of beneficial bacteria. I'll be freeing my EcoSpherian...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Whoa! So I'm guessing this is why nerites aren't recommended for opae ula tanks: photo.JPG He finally discovered the diatom-covered coral overnight, and turned a good deal of it into poo. He's like a tiny Rumplestiltskin, but instead of straw it's algae, and instead of gold it's poo. I'm thi...

Re: My success story

:smt006 ! So far things seem to be OK, except I stuck a Marimo moss ball in there and a nerite snail, which I know aren't recommended. I just love nerites!

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Ken, I did scour through the forum, and seemed to find a lot of conflicting info! My takeaway is that some(most?) Marimos will slowly die, while others will adapt. I do have the accidental 1-gal aquarium I could transfer it to the moment it looks a little different. I would also be happy to buy one ...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Mech, I actually got some separate ammonia test strips, and have been most closely monitoring that! No buildup of ammonia, despite the copious snail poop. I'm also seeing some nitrates, but I didn't catch a nitrite spike. This is what I'm concerned about. Is it possible the Dr. Tim's and water I tra...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Thanks for the tips! I was planning on dumping them into a Pyrex bowl, and adding water from my tank over 30 mins. I figure they are pretty hardy, considering my mom's 10-year-old EcoSpherian is most likely living in what is ostensibly poop-soup by now. I only wish that little guy weren't living acr...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Thanks so much, Ken! This has been an exercise of patience for me, and now I'm at a point where I've gotten so used to waiting that I am hesitant to pull the plug. I'll get my shrimp order in this weekend! Should I keep the Marimo in there for now, if I'm carefully monitoring it? After 2 months in b...

New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Hello forum! My name's Lindsay, I live in Brooklyn NY, and I discovered the cruelty of EcoSpheres shortly after purchasing one on Amazon Prime day, when I went online to see if these little shrimp guys were sexually dimorphic. I initially thought they were similar to Cherry Shrimp, and that my mom's...

Re: Accidental 1-Gal Planted Tank

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! You're absolutely right, the nerite is pooping all day every day. I think once I am absolutely sure that the tank is adequately handling all the snail waste, I'll see what my LFS has in terms of neocaridina. The "lowest grade"/least expensive shrimp I've se...

Accidental 1-Gal Planted Tank

Hello everyone! I'd like to introduce myself to this forum by admitting to a classic beginner's mistake: before stumbling across this forum, I read up on species of plants that would grow in the brackish water 1-gal tank I planned to release my Eco-Sphere prisoners into, and bought some Java Fern an...

Re: My success story

Thanks so much for your extensive record-keeping! This has been a very fun and inspiring post to read through, as I am a new shrimp enthusiast getting ready to release 4 EcoSphere shrimp into a 1-gallon no-tech aquarium I've been cycling for a couple of months (right now it has a bunch of diatom gro...
