Bacterial mat
Does anyone know anything about the bacterial mat that develops on the floor of the anchialine pools, or possibly on the floor of the aquarium? Mustafa? In my 10-gallon, I notice that the shrimp spend a lot of time with the aragonite sand that I use for the tank floor. There are areas where the shri...

Re: Spinach anyone?
The leafy greens I feed are definitely organic (Earthbound triple-washed). In my ten-gallon tank, I have eight crabs and 175 shrimp. That is a new tank, one month old. The shrimp eat the leaves voraciously until there is nothing left but the stem and veins. They pick it to the bone and it takes them...

Re: Spinach anyone?
It would appear that the Opae like par-boiled kale as well. They sure do eat better than my kids did when they were young!

Re: photos of dwarf hermit
Mine don't have any blue on their legs. They have grey legs with white claws. But I think the colors may change on these. Someone wrote that the colors are best when freshly molted.

Re: Spinach anyone?
Here's a shot of a large (2-inch) spinach leaf after 24 hours in the tank. The shrimp have cleaned it to the stem and veins. They really like it and I can typically see 50 of them on the leaf at any time. The crabs like it too. Here you can see a dwarf hermit crab, sharing peacefully with the shrimp...

Re: photos of dwarf hermit
The other crab may have died because of the shock of transfer, transportation, etc. I have not had any feeding conflicts between the crabs and the Opae. The crabs hog all the food at the beginning. But they are sloppy eaters, shredding and spewing small pieces of food all over the place. Then the sh...

Spinach anyone?
I remembered that when I had a freshwater aquarium, the Red Cherry Shrimp loved par-boiled spinach. And I read that the Hawaiian natives would feed sweet potato and other vegetables to the wild Opae. So I put a small piece from a leaf of baby spinach (par-boiled to soften) in my Opae tank. Took a wh...

Opae and sea fans
Here is a photo of a section of my new 10-gallon tank. The sea fans are about 3 to 4 inches in height. Of all the items in the tank, the Opae seem most attracted to the sea fans. They appear like birds in a tree. I think there must be 50 of them in the two sea fans. Behind the fans is some of Mustaf...

Re: Algae Build Up... Other problems
I'm not familiar with the term 1.5 lb. aquarium. Do you mean 1.5 gallons? Or do you mean a small 24 ounce aquarium? A 24-ounce aquarium is very mall and would not allow for a lot of free swimming. And if 3 out of 5 have died, I suspect a water quality problem as well. I suggest you build a one-gallo...

Re: Excessive salinity
I got false readings. Air bubbles on the dial caused it to float up. More careful readings showed the salinity in both tanks to be at 1.014 - spot on.

Excessive salinity
I have kept my tanks for the last year or so, without using a hydrometer. Today, I found one that measures at the low levels of brackish water. Turns out that my water has a salinity of 1.024 and this is way in excess of the recommended 1.005 to 1.010. I have also seen recommendations of 1.014 to 1....

Re: Check out this new shell for my hermit crab
I'm using a Canon G10, which is a pro-level point and shoot. Not as good as my SLR, but handy to have around. I use it for work constantly. The cost of the Canon G series cameras comes to about $500. I find that cell phones don't do such a great job. The key with the aquarium shots is to work both w...

Re: Check out this new shell for my hermit crab
Here's a shot of a different hermit, also in a nice colorful shell. This photo is very clear and you can see the one large claw on this "left-handed" hermit. He does not have the "zebra" markings on his legs, so he may not be the Clibanarius Zebra, as claimed, but another form of...

Check out this new shell for my hermit crab
Check out the snazzy Nerite shell that my hermit has selected. With those blue eyes and new shell, this guy really has it going on.
