Re: berried alpha

The tank is still going strong - seems to thrive on neglect. I can't tell how many Alphas are there, but they are there. And plenty of opae as well. I never see any berried opae or larva. But they must be there because I do spot some small young shrimp. And I've added some small hermit crabs, so the...

Thai Micro Crab

The crab in the picture is a freshwater Micro Crab from Thailand. The body is about 3/8" in diameter and the span across claws is about 3/4". I just got them and they're in a one-gallon freshwater tank with cherry shrimp and an assortment of snails. The one you see is on a Marimo ball. I'v...

Re: Opae Ula Are Not Bright Red/How to Transfer Opae

You get the macro-algea here from Mustafa. Click on the petshrimp store tag above. As for nerite snails, you get them from shrimpmart.net, pipipi nerite snails. They won't multiply. If they do it will be minimal. They do not overrun the tank like trumpet snails.

Re: Opae Ula Are Not Bright Red/How to Transfer Opae

I find the color variation to be quite natural. Some of my Opae are brilliant red while others are pale or clear. A seven-inch square block is rather small and I estimate it can safely hold 25 Opae. I also believe they will not multiply beyond their environmental restraints, so you should be okay. A...

Re: How to ensure shrimps are well fed but not overfed?

It's true that overfeeding "the tank" can cause it to crash. Uneaten food is bad for water quality; you can get an algae bloom, etc. But on the other hand, we love to feed our Opae. It's one of the few ways to interact. My solution is to keep brackish nerite snails and dwarf hermit crabs. ...

Small fry but no larvae

Interesting how I see lots of tiny, fully formed fry swimming around, but no larvae. Only once, quite a while ago I saw some larvae floating. But my tanks are heavily planted, so I'm thinking the larvae stay contained in the rocks and plants?

Re: Brown film on water surface

I have experimented and found that by placing a paper towel on the surface of the water and removing it, it takes just about all the film. Easier than using the net and more effective. The film seems to elude the net.

Brown film on water surface

I've noticed a brown film at the top of my tank - the water surface. I was able to skim some of it off with a net, but can't get it all. Any tips or tricks that might help with that?

Re: Metabetaeus lohena - only old topic

I have seven Alphas in my ten-gallon tank. I know that one of them was heavily berried a while back. Haven't seen that one in a while. But I have spotted some real small shrimp in the tank. Problem is that I don't know if they are Opae or Alphas. I rarely see berried shrimp and I rarely see larvae. ...

Re: New opae - feeding / dawrd hermit crab

I have hermits in both my opae tanks and they are doing well. You need extra empty shells, which can be found online - Amazon and ebay. They like to switch to new shells. I will add a flake or two of fish food every week and the hermits go right after it. And they find algae too. Sometimes it looks ...

Re: Photo of Opae releasing berries

No larvae yet and it's been about five weeks. I no longer see the berried female. She is either hiding or has dropped her berries. Maybe we'll see something in another week or two.

Re: baby shrimp die

Shrimp like to hide. In one of my tanks, I never saw a berried female and I never saw larvae floating. And then one day, I saw tiny little shrimp feeding off the glass. So I would say to wait and see.

Re: Bristle Worm, etc...

You can get a truckload of small nerite shells on ebay. All sizes and colors. I think amazon has them too.
