Sometimes I have the same in freshwater... Still dont know what is it but probably bacteria since I cant see any structure on microscope.

Lava contain metals in the form of chemically inert silicates. Pyrite is a sulphid, not soluble in water, but absolutly not chemically inert. It is also rich in stain, arsenic, nickel and other metals who will slowly reacti with water, enough to kill invertebrates.

I saw them under the ice. Sadly the aquarist who brood them outside stopped the hobby. But i had absolutly no problems keeping them at home in winter, in my cold bedroom (I sleep with open windows even if it freeze outside) without heater. My water was sometimes at 12°C and I had berries year round....

Marimo ball DO survive in brackish condition and even grow faster than in freshwater. They just need to be slowly acclimated. I still think Mustafa's moss balls are regular marimo balls wish talli or spores somehow ended in his tank.

I will ask if i can show you his photos. BTW temperature shouldnt be the problem, il France we breed malawa outside and they are still active when the surface freeze.
