Re: my Opae Ula finally arrived!

Yes, totally normal. I even have some banded shrimps in my tank.

Re: help me make a paradigm shift -- why no sponge filter?

These shrimp live decades in setups without filters. They are just not necessary. However, some people do use filters. Some use heaters. There are videos on YouTube with filters in the tanks and the shrimp seem to be doing fine. I bought some shrimp off a local a few years ago and she said she uses ...

The shrimp look rather pale, but otherwise great!

Re: Day 1 new set up

I know what you mean, but simple is best for these guys.
1/2 inch of sand is fine, the calcium rocks are fine, and your tank looks great. More rocks will be more stability for your tank. If you want to add a bit more sand, go ahead. I think I have about 3/4 inch of substrate in mine.

Re: Dying snails?!?

I have to agree with Varanus. I would stick with the MTS snails. I had 2 nerites in my 2 gallon tank and there was not enough algae. I removed the larger nerite and kept the small horned one, but it still didn't have enough algae. I swapped it back and forth from my freshwater tank, but it died 2 ye...

Re: Shrimp Newbie

There is already great advice in this thread. No sticks, wood, or bark. No live corals, only use coral skeletons. Sea fans are nice and add visual interest. If you are on a budget, I would start with 10-15 shrimp. If you aren't on a budget, I think 30 would be a nice start for a 2 gallon. I started ...

Re: Quart Jar

My mistake, I thought that was sand. Very cool what you have going on with the lava rocks. Now I want to get some!

Re: New tank set up

That is interesting. I also think stability is important. The sudden drop in temperature was more than my larvae and shrimplets could handle. Have you noticed any changes in the population increase since bringing it in?

Re: Hello!

Nice work! I can't stand having so much macroalgae, I have to pick some out when it starts taking over. Now we just need to see your tank.

Re: Two year anniversary!

I saw your questions on another post and saw your tank here. Your tank looks great and I wouldn't worry about having enough algae. Your shrimp are clearly doing well! If you are concerned , just pick up some macroalgae. Once you have it, it grows like a weed. I throw out chunks of it a few times a y...

Re: New tank set up

I suppose you are right. It seems a shame to throw out everything from the old tank. I would bet that there is no safe way to clean natural decor or substrate. Boiling or scrubbing probably wouldn't do anything for contaminates. They sure are hardy to cold temperatures, especially considering they c...

Re: Quart Jar

That's a nice set up. It makes me consider a tank with black substrate. Your shrimp look great!
It looks like you have a pretty thick layer of substrate. You don't need to use so much, just about 0.5-1 inch is sufficient, and then your shrimps will have more room to swim. :)

Re: New tank set up

My tank is still going, but sad to say it is not going strong. I moved in 2017, then again 3 months later, and then a third time in September 2019. My poor shrimps have had a rough go of it. The first move was uneventful and the shrimps continued releasing larvae and breeding as though nothing had h...

Re: New tank set up advice please

My tank doesn't have an air pump and I don't have surface film. I do not think the air stone is necessary.
When I first set up my tank, I had a significant quantity of surface film and algae, but the snails and shrimps cleared it up and it has been fine since.
