Re: My Shrimp are dying!!!

I understand that your RO unit is designed and intended for aquarium water. A long while back, I used an RO unit to make water for a fish aquarium. But shrimp are invertebrates and have different requirements than fish. There are many heavy metals and other elements that are harmful to invertebrates...

Re: My Shrimp are dying!!!

I agree with Ken's comment on starting over. But I would recommend you do it with store bought distilled water. We need to rule out your tap water as the problem.

Re: My Shrimp are dying!!!

Several possibilities here. Your shrimp may have had some illness, but I doubt it. You bought new shrimp and they died too. If your water chemistry is correct for salinity and pH, then I must question your water. Because you are using RO water, I assume that you start with your tap water. Perhaps th...

Re: Cloudy Water

Nobody has responded because you have provided very little detail as to what is in your tank, how you prepared it, etc.

Re: Another new guy with a couple questions.

I think you just need to wait a week or two for the tank to fully cycle and for the bacteria to develop. As far as the macroalgae, I believe it simply sucks up the nitrates as fertilizer, once the bacteria convert the nitrites to nitrates. Patience is the key.

Re: Photo of Opae releasing berries

Thanks guys, for all the good info. How can you tell when they are ready to hatch?

Re: Photo of Opae releasing berries

She still had the berries the next morning. They looked very loose and I am wondering if they actually are ready to be released. Can anyone tell from the photo at what stage they are at?

Photo of Opae releasing berries

This is an Opae that appears to be releasing her berries. This is not the berried Alpha shown in my other post. This Opae has been on the pictured sea fan for a while and it looks like she is trying to shake off her berries. I don't see any larvae yet, but hope to see some in the morning. This is th...

Re: My Shrimp are dying!!!

It's hard to diagnose over the Internet. I doubt that copper piping used in the distillation process caused this. The R/O water failure would confirm this. I can only assume that some contaminant got into your glass bowl and the objects therein and will not easily be removed. I would recommend start...

Better photo of berried alpha

I was finally able to get a better shot of my elusive berried alpha. The large lobster claws don't show up well in the photo. But you can see the sectioned (articulated) detail of the tail, much like a lobster. This is still not a great photo, but much better than what I originally posted. It will b...

berried alpha

I have a ten gallon tank that I started in May of this year. The tank is doing just fine with about 175 Opae and 7 alphas (Metabetaeus Lohena). I rarely see the alphas and I believe they live mostly within the rock caves I have built. And I have never seen a berried shrimp in the two years I have be...

Re: Washing aragonite sand

I first boil the sand to kill off bacteria. Then, in a small (quarter gallon) container with lid, I place 1/4 container of sand, fill with another quarter container of tap water, close the lid and shake it up well. Then I pour off the milky water. I repeat this several times and eventually the water...

Identifying algae

I've got a good grouping of various nerite snails and they keep my glass quite clean. But today, I noticed a certain type of green algae on my seashells. This algae is growing in perfect little circles, about 1/16th to 1/8th inch diameter. The algae is a beautiful bright green, not brown or dingy. A...
