Re: How many snails is too many snails?

.. Leave them. They will self regulate, and 18 is not too many for a 2.5 gal tank. Also, snails are a must have for an opae ula habitat. They do a great job of deep cleaning the substrate. All of my tanks (13) have snails. Alot of snails. .. Thanks so much! It helps to know that the setup is okay. ...

Re: How many snails is too many snails?

New shrimp owner here... 7 weeks ago I set up a new 2.5 gallon nano tank for opae. A few days ago I finally added 23 happy little opae ula to the cycled tank. They're doing fine so far, though after an initial frenzy they're mostly hiding in the dry-rock coral. Here's my question: I ended up with 1...

Re: Ready for shrimp?

I think your tank is ready. Due to the macroalgae competing with the biofilm, you may not see much visible algae, but I think you're good to go. And, yes, snails can move around during the day, too. It's absolutely normal. And if anything dies in there...just leave it in there...unless you have a m...

Re: My water looks dirty and my microalgae is dying HELP!

Yep, I pulled out all the browning algae, so now there’s a small greenish bush left. The water is clearing up, especially now that there are new babies feeding. There are at least 10 shrimp in the bowl. I might consider buying a new algae bush if this one doesn’t perk up. Snails are a maybe (how ex...

Re: aloha

I'm living on Hawaii Island, if I got captive bred opae ula, would I need to put the tank on a light timer? would I have to purchase salt and make my own salt water solution, or could I just get salt water form the ocean? Mahalo! ~J .. You can go to a tropical fish store and buy some marine or reef...

Re: Newbie water questions

The water is filtered and processed to the point that it's overkill- that'll work just fine. I used plain, $1 distilled water from my local grocery store. For acclimating, just dumping all the water into the tank will work, I believe it adds some nutrients and algae spores to "kick off" t...

Surface biofilm, harmless, and eventually the shrimp and snails eat it. Is the shell your calcium source? I would add another calcium source such as a small piece or two of cuttlefish bone. The stuff used for birds.

Re: Algae losing color

image.jpg I have some shrimp, snails, and macro algae in a 2 gallon container. Everything purchased from this site. Have had this setup for about a year. One shrimp bred about 6 months ago, but haven’t had any since then. I’ve been feeding one micro pellet of aquatic frog / tadpole food every two m...

Re: Clutched for 2 months?

As it turns out, my shrimp mamas were gaslighting me. Turned out that I had 4 preggers swimming around, but they were playing tag team and only showing 2 at a time. I've now got ~50 floaters that appeared over night so they're dropping berries by the bushel now. Still have at least 1 with a full cl...

Photo? If it is coming back that quickly then I doubt it is the macroalgae that Mustafa sells. I could be wrong, though. The tanks must have alot of nutrients for algae to grow that quickly.

Re: Cloud layer?

The cloud layer has settled to the floor of the tank. Looks like a light snow. The water column is still slightly cloudy, but slowly clearing. The shrimp don’t seem to care at all! They are busy doing their normal activities. I have no idea what happened to cause the cloud to develop. Just keep wat...

Re: Cloud layer?

Tank setup is about 2 months old. Everything in tank purchased from petshrimp. Fed a small amount of spiralina flakes about a week ago and it was all eaten or carried away. First time I noticed the cloud like layer was last night after I top off the tank with distilled water from a gallon jug I’ve ...
