Re: Starting the tank- instant ocean ?
Yes, do indeed resist all that equipment simply because it isn't necessary. I know it can be hard, especially if you have prior experience with aquariums, but just keep in mind that you're able to get away with not utilizing those tools simply because these particular animals (shrimp and/or snails) ...

Re: Starting the tank- instant ocean ?
Based on you photos and the things you listed that make up your aqua-scaping in there, your water may not remain buffered enough due to the apparent lack of calcium carbonate material. The shells you mentioned are calcium carbonate, but those alone may not be enough to sustain a healthy level of wat...

Re: Opae ula enjoying the current?
Generally, I would say that the shrimp do NOT prefer any water disturbance despite what you described. That's part of the reason why having no filter or air stone is recommended for these guys. Also, the anchialine pools that are their natural environment are very still. Every time anyone tops off t...

[/attachment] Both tanks are doing awesome - Snails, hermie, shrimp.... Everyone happy and healthy - hopefully turning a corner here!! :smt006 Not sure if you already answered this question earlier in this post, but what species of hermit crab do you have that does well in brackish water? I am...

Performed your garlic test on a sprig - no garlic smell whatsoever.Stalker wrote:I think this is a Charophyta alga, maybe Nitella or Chara species, some are known as brackish even if the majority are freshwater. do they smell garlic when crushed?

Re: Discovered A New Brackish Water Plant!
Thanks for the update Jason! Ok, sometimes I do miss some info (like your low salinity water) when I go through 500 (ok...maybe not so many) messages at a time. :-D In any case, I've fixed your first post and I'll try to remember to look up again what this plant is. I did identify it at some point....

Re: Update: new offspring
Y One other update - I received my refractometer, calibrated it with distilled water, and to my shock my salinity was only reading at 1.011! According to my big clunky hydrometer it was supposedly at 1.018ish last reading. Im throwing that piece of junk in the garbage. I did a top off with some 1.0...

Re: My Shrimp are dying!!!
I came across this post and was going to suggest that you simply follow these steps: http://www.petshrimp.com/opaesetup.php, and do no more and no less than what it suggests is necessary for a healthy tank. But then I noticed that the last reply was a year old. So, what did you end up doing and did ...

Re: My Ecospherians are 21
That is truly amazing! And welcome to the Started-With-Ecosphere-Shrimp Club ! I had my Ecosphere for 6 years before freeing the shrimp and delving into this hobby. It's been about 2 years since, and they are still doing well. Just follow the tank set-up instructions that Mustafa provides on this si...

Re: My Opae Ula Tank Introduction
On another note, Why is it so hard for me to grow algae? I dont see any algae growing and i have the light on 14+ hours. I wish i had the tank setup near sunlight. Does anyone know how to grow real live spirulina? Hmm if there are animals in your tank, there should be algae growing at some point. I...

Re: My Opae Ula Tank Introduction
Theres probably no difference whether you use filters or without, etc. I might have to skip the canister filter altogether due to the water flow it creates. I just worry about ammonia buildup, especially when feeding them. Im at a loss at what to do, i want to take out that huge black HMF sponge fi...

Re: My Opae Ula Tank Introduction
Hi jason, thanks for your input. This has been a long going debate i think. Yes, the overall concensus is that opaes prefer completely still water and can survive in any conditions witout any filtration nedded, but i tend to rely on what successful breeders do, since breeding is difficult to perfec...

Re: Have been lurking for a long time..... Now need help....
Hi, Thanks for your comment..... Just to clarify..... Those plants were in my tank when I first set it up in December for a few days, and taken off. Currently I have two tanks, the 5-gallon only has a macro algae, marimo ball and an algae ball from Mustafa, the 10 gallon only Marimo balls. No Plant...

Re: Discovered A New Brackish Water Plant!
I got a sprig of this from a local pet store (who is actually selling my shrimp) twice already and for some reason it just dies off in my tanks. Maybe my salinity is not high enough as this is normally a marine organism. I had found out the actual name of it, but forgot...maybe I can go search for ...
