Re: My Opae Ula Tank Introduction

Nice tank! Concerning your decision to replace the larger filter with a smaller one, with Opae Ula, it's actually best not to have any filter at all. With these particular species of shrimp, not only is it not necessary regarding keeping the water chemistry healthy, but they also prefer completely s...

Re: Have been lurking for a long time..... Now need help....

From your photos, it looks like I had the exact same problem with excessive growths in the first tank I ever set up for these guys. Also like you, the catalyst for that tank was 2 shrimp I freed from my Ecosphere of 6 years. Here's a link to my post from a while back concerning that issue: http://ww...

Re: Discovered A New Brackish Water Plant!

jason those plants look familar. I seem to remember the pictures. Do they still exist? Ken Yes, the plants are still going strong. You were the only one who commented when I first posted it, before having to re-post the photos recently, so you are most likely recalling seeing the photos back then. ...

Re: Freed Ecosphere shrimp - Dinoflagellates in tank already

Thanks for the update! Not sure what happened with your reply to me - must've mis-typed my email address. I am about to re-upload the photos for another corrupted post as well, so I'm glad to know that you're ok with how I went about remedying that issue in this post. Concerning a tank update, this ...

Re: Shrimp Having Trouble Swimming!

I first got into Opae Ula after freeing 2 shrimp from an Ecosphere I had for 6 years. That was about 9 months ago, and they're still doing fine. I even brought up their hiding, like you did, in my first post on this site ( http://www.petshrimp.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5199 ), and it ...

Discovered A New Brackish Water Plant!

By "discover" I mean it's the first time I'VE ever seen it, not that I'm the first person to have ever come across it, obviously. :D I set up my first tank when I freed my 2 Ecosphere shrimp this past October, and I first noticed this plant beginning to grow around that same time in a smal...

is TOO much calcium carbonate in tank ever a concern?

Hi - I was wondering if it is possible to over-buffer a tank with too much pH-raising material (whatever that material may be)? Is it possible to raise the pH to a level that is detrimental to the Opae Ula just by adding too much calcium carbonate? For example, what if a tank had all-aragonite subst...

Re: Freed Ecosphere shrimp - Dinoflagellates in tank already

Nice looking set up. Judging from the pictures and the fact that the aquarium has recently been set up, my guess it that the brown stuff are just diatoms. They usually show up first and in great numbers when a tank is fresh. Over time, they will subside and will probably be replaced by green algae....

Re: Freed Ecosphere shrimp - Dinoflagellates in tank already

Your tank setup looks nice. I would not feed for a long while. Two shrimp in two gallons need no food. My shrimp would be all over the growth in your tank. I use 6500k lights but probably not necessary. You lighting seems fine. Add some macro algae and another eight shrimp. It will enhance your set...

Freed Ecosphere shrimp - Dinoflagellates in tank already???

Hello everyone! And happy holidays! (I know it may seem sad that I'm posting this on xmas eve, but don't worry - I'm ok ;-) ) First time participant here. About a month ago, I freed 2 supershrimp from one of those baseball-sized Ecospheres I had received as a gift about 6 years ago. They weren't sho...
