Re: No top off for a month? On vacation

In their natural habitats, adults experience and can tolerate substantial changes in salinity. Studies have shown that maintaining salinity on the higher side is conducive to better survival into the post-larval stage. This is probably because larvae live down in rock crevices, where salinity remain...

Re: Supershrimp mossball reproduction

I have had multiple Chaetomorpha ‘mossball’ growths produced over the past year. All are very slow growing.

Re: Some light reading on opae ula

Re the absence of interbreeding mentioned in the article, this is in reference to some Maui populations. Halocaradina rubra populations also occur on the Big Island. You’d need to know the locality from which the stock came from that you purchased.

Nice article. I highly recommend this book: Hawaiian Anchialine Pools: Windows to a Hidden World. Offers a good overview of habiats. https://mutualpublishing.com/product/ha ... den-world/

If the operculum (‘trap door’) is closing, then it’s very likely still alive.

Re: Bristle Worm, etc...

Bristle worms, also known as polychaetes, are common in both marine and brackish water habitats. In some cases they are capable of living in both conditions. There should be no problems in an opae ula container. In marine aquaria, however, some polychaete species, known as fire worms, can be introdu...

Re: Visit to Hawaii anchialine pools

Most of the anchialine pools I visited had introduced mosquito fish, and consequently I didn’t see shrimp. I’m glad the Four Seasons Resort is doing a good job of conserving this population.

Re: Visit to Hawaii anchialine pools

Today I visited a opae ula pool at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, Hawaii. The population is thriving, probably because there is no fish present. It was great to see so many swimming in the water as well as grazing on the bottom.
