Re: Opae Ula tank with normal marrimos: after 2 years, something new has sprouted?

I had chaeto pop up from nowhere! There may have been some tiny pieces when I bought my shrimp ten years ago. Or perhaps it forms from spores in the air/ But I do know that algae is a natural phenomenon.

Re: New tank

That looks nice. What type of algae is that? It looks like hair algae.

Re: Dying baby shrimp?

The video posted above is for freshwater shrimp. I doubt those pests would survive brackish water. Your photo shows a post-larvae shrimp, rather well developed. If they are laying at the bottom of the tank, there might be a water quality problem. I have baby shrimp that size and they are quite activ...

Re: Baby moss balls?

I am not an expert here, but I am unaware of "moss balls". There is the Marimo Moss Ball, which is actually a form of algae and not moss. Some say they will thrive in a brackish tank and others say they will rot and crash the tank. I am experimenting with Marimo Balls in glass jars with br...

Re: Calcium for water buffering

I bought a scuttle bone from the pet shop. They sell it for parakeets and canaries to rub and clean their beaks. It is fish bone and provides the calcium the shrimp need for their exoskeletons. It is a big piece, about three inches long. I cut off a half-inch piece and throw it in the tank. If you u...

Re: Lint or dust got into tank

If the debris is floating in the water or on the surface, you can skim it off with a net. If they are in the bottom, you can use a straw with your finger at the top to siphon them out. Hold your finger at the top of the straw to keep the air in. Then hover above the debris, remove your finger and th...

Re: CYCLING MISTAKE! Need advice

You do show some ammonia. I m not sure what level of ammonia is acceptable. I like to cycle my tanks with Malaysian Trumpet Snails. They are quite hardy and inexpensive as well. I place them along with some tiny (very tiny) amounts of food such as algae wafers. At some point, you should see some tin...

Yes, my experience has been that Alphas are a bit more aggressive. At this time, I do not have any of these larger Alphas.

Re: Behavior of juveniles

Thanks for the prompt answer. I remain amazed at how long these shrimp have survived. The tank is approximately 2.5 gallons. The water and glass remain crystal clear with Nerite snails aiding in the effort. For me the key has been to do less, just about ignoring them except for the occasional small ...

Re: Isolate injured shrimp?

They are docile and do not attack each other or their young. They eat algae and biofilm. You can leave the injured fellow and add more if your tank can sustain more.

Behavior of juveniles

My tank is about 10 years old and doing well. I find larvae on a continuous basis. The larvae float up and down in a heads down position. They then begin to swim sideways and I believe this is a post larvae phase. They are still quite tiny when they begin to swim sideways. At this point they tend to...
