Best lighting for opae tank?

I have always used a standard (warm) light on my tank. I recently purchased a full spectrum grow light, thinking it will aid in the growth of algae needed for the shrimp and snails. I am wondering if there is a specific light that would be best for the opae?

Re: Should I leave dead snail shells in tank

I believe they provide calcium, which growing shrimp and snails both need.

Re: How to safely clean glass

A few nerite snails will totally clean your glass! I have three of them in a 2.7 gallon aquarium. They just love to feed on the algae on the glass. The attached photo shows a nerite on the back wall of the jar. The other two are hiding somewhere. They work at keeping the glass clean.

Overpopulation?

I have had a "hands off" attitude toward my 2.7 gallon tank. And it has taken off! I now see many baby shrimp swimming around and lots of larvae floating everywhere. Will they know when to stop? When I was a child, a friend had a guppy tank. The guppies overpopulated to a very high degree ...

Re: It's been a while ...

I will work on taking some good photos. In the interim, I see many larvae floating around as well as many small fry (if fry is the right word). It seems that the tank (large 2.7 gallon jar) is really taking off. I will occasionally see a berried female, but not too often. I have built the shrimp som...

Re: Dried sea fans?

Are you sure the "microscopic" babies are not new ones? A year is a long time for larvae to stay small. I suspect there are continuous larvae forming if the water conditions are good. And yes, many years ago I had a sea fan that decomposed very slowly over time. But it did not seem to do a...

Marimo balls prefer brackish water?

I have read that Marimo moss balls prefer brackish water. The article I read also says to add salt to freshwater if the Marimo ball gets brown spots. I am hoping this is correct.

Re: Snails dead, but shrimp are fine.

Sometimes they just lay there for days, and then they are back in action. Are you quite sure they are dead?

Finally, floating Larvae

My tank has been established for ten years and I have never seen floating larvae until today. I have seen berried females and tiny fry swimming around from time to time. Today, I finally saw a few floating larvae. I understand why I never saw them before; it is because they are so very tiny. I'm gla...

Dried sea fans?

I see that most "ecospheres" use sea fans. I am wondering if it is okay to place a small sea fan in my established tank. The tank holds about 2-1/2 gallons and approximately 50 shrimp.

Re: java moss question

I have read as follows: "Taxiphyllum barbieri, better known as Java moss, is one of the most popular plants for brackish aquariums. It can make a decorative cover for rocks or wood or even be left free-floating to provide refuge for fry and other shy aquarium inhabitants. Specific water values ...

java moss question

I was thinking of adding java moss to my opae ula tank. It is a two gallon tank and has been established for ten years. I often see new fry, so I know the tank is healthy. Java moss appears to be widely available and inexpensive. But I have read that it may contain many hitchhikers. And I have heard...

It's been a while ...

I haven't posted here in about ten years. So I wanted to stop by and say hello. My tank is now 10 years old and flourishing. This week I have seen one berried female and several new fry. I will post some photos soon. And I want to pass on the secret to my success: Do nothing! Don't overfeed, don't c...
