Re: My beginner Opa Ulae experience
I agree with Varanus. Emergency water change couldn't have hurt, and it's a normal behavior for them to feed upside down at the surface. Glad everyone is looking ok again.

Re: My beginner Opa Ulae experience
They are the ultimate recyclers! Don't worry about the algae; they will munch on biofilm and bacteria all day and all night long. When you do feed, make it a teeeeeeeny amount and keep track of the last time you fed. Overfeeding is doom :( I throw in a tiny floating shrimp pellet once a month for ab...

Re: My beginner Opa Ulae experience
Looking good! The shrimp tend to go pale when disturbed or under stress. They should color up over the next few days or weeks. Likely they will molt--keep a sharp eye out for their ghostly skeletons clinging to your decorations. The skeletons don't last long with the hungry shrimp, but they're neat ...

Re: does it matter what kind of algae is growing in my tank?
Shrimp larvae can become snared in hair algae and die. The chaeto and mossballs from this site are ok, and the surface algae that grows in your tank is ok. That's about it.

Re: My beginner Opa Ulae experience
Hey y'all, take a deep breath and don't freak out. The opae are really good at just chilling in a holding pattern. It's their super power! I kept 20 shrimp in a mason jar for a month while I packed up and moved across the country, and they were totally fine. They will also be fine if you want to lea...

Re: Setup suggestions needed for newbie
Get a smallish jar with a lid and pour the shrimp and their bag water into it. They probably shipped with a piece of yarn in the bag--throw that into the jar, too. Add a bit of your half strength saltwater mix if you need more water to fill the jar. Poke a small hole in the lid and put the jar somew...

Ah, an opportunity to practice the key components of opae ula husbandry: waiting and resisting the temptation to do things to the tank
The bubbles will disappear on their own. Adding some snails will help to move things along. Your tank setup looks good!

I use Gorilla Glue It's aquarium safe! Although it does expand in unpredictable ways sometimes.

Re: Newbie introduction
I agree, Mustafa's packing is very good. It's cool they arrived already! It's nice to have something to look at while waiting for the tank to be ready for shrimp. The snails will probably disappear into the substrate for a while, but mine tend to come up at night.

Great set up, they're going to love it! I really like that big rock in the right corner. How many shrimp will you order?

I second the metal lid concern. Better to swap it for glass, ceramic, or plastic.

Re: Absolute beginner - Some concerns
Congrats! It sounds like you're setting yourself up for success. I agree with SuperProofer--it will be easiest if you set everything up the way you like it, add the water, then just wait wait wait. Throw the macroalgae in as soon as you want, along with the water it ships in. Ditto for the snails. S...

So cool! Set up a tiny tank and see if it will live there! But yes, better remove it.
