Re: Opae Ula 29 Gallon Tank

I have a 10 gallon tank, and is hard to see the shrimp at first, but once they start reproducing that no longer will be an issue. My current population is very high. I do not think you need a pump regardless of size of the tank once you introduce the shrimp. Also the pump may stress the shrimp, whi...

Re: Opae Ula 29 Gallon Tank

I just got a cheap 29 gallon tank and wanted to use it for opae ula but was worried that it's too large. I'm worried about oxygen levels and if adding a small 60 gph pump would be needed (I understand that with opae ula no filtration is preferred). To build up the tank I plan on getting rough white...

Re: opae ula vs. Metabetaeus Lohena eating routines? different?

I keep a colony of around 80 ML in a 10 gallon tank. I run a sponge filter. I feed daily frozen bloodworms, daphnia, & brine shrimp. Flake food & live gammarus shrimp. I don't see them feeding much on any algae. Always on the hunt for food and will eat anything they can catch & hold on ...

Re: Shrimp stays near surface walls

It is probably because as you said, some of the spirulina stays at the surface so they hang out where the food is. They do love the stuff. I give mine a very small amount every 12-14 days and they get very active when it goes in. I would reduce the feeding. .. Agree. I would stop feeding altogether...

Re: Looking to improve my tank

The snails are hawaiian pipipi snails. How do i go about removing all the detritus at the bottom of the tank? .. You could use a turkey blaster or some aquarium airline tubing to siphon the detritus. Airline tubing is a very small diameter, which in this case is a good thing for detritus removal in...

..
I wouldn't keep them together. Why risk shutting down Opae breeding!

I would set up a separate tank for the Met.

Re: Absolute beginner - Some concerns

I mixed the salt solution and filled the tank (used some tubing to do a siphon for the first time in my life!)...but there are bubbles all over the lava rocks. Just tons and tons of bubbles. I've tried rubbing a wooden stirring stick over the surfaces, I've pounded on the desk...bubbles come off, b...

Re: Absolute beginner - Some concerns

Such great feedback. I'll be sure to be very careful if I have any need to change anything in the tank. I would hate to squash any of these little guys. Sorry you had that experience, Debbie, but good to know that five months on things are back on track, and with babies on the way! And thank you fo...

Re: Some observations looking through a magnifier glass

While I was watching my 14 larvae bobbing around the tank using my magnifier glass I saw a few things that I had not seen before. First I saw a female shrimp with the distended swimmerets/puffed out abdomen. There was some commotion around her and I’m sure she will be berried soon. Secondly, this s...

Re: Beneficial Bacteria and Rescaping

So, my tank is almost two years old and I have 13 shrimp (and one shrimp larvae) and many snails. I recently moved and was able to do so without completely cleaning out my tank by lowering the water levels and separating things into various buckets. Now I’m moved and it’s been a week with all my sh...

Re: New home for my shrimp/Need advice

Just my opinions but adding a hermit crab you'll also have to feed it. The goal of an Opae Ula tank is for it to be self sustaining = no feedings. Also water flowing is not a good thing if you want the ideal setting. It's ok but they may not breed. --------- Agree, or at least very little feeding. ...

Re: Bitten by the Shrimp-keeping Bug

July 6th Update: Received package via USPS from petshrimp.com. No ice pack was included--talk about hardy little critters! Shrimp, snails and macroalgae were very well packed and everything was bagged separately. Got 21 shrimp (1 extra for DOA). Also discovered 2 tiny baby shrimps in the bag. Not a...
