Re: Progress updates
No hatching yet, but the females all still have most of their eggs, which I hear is pretty good for a first breeding in a tank (I think one female may have dropped a quarter of her eggs, or she is just carrying fewer than the others). I'm also pretty sure I now have four berried females. Assuming mo...

Re: New here with questions
I had read that and understand that the bioshere is bad news, I was just wondering if there was a way to make it work well, sounds like the answer is no. Thank you for your time, I'm going to continue to read through the forums and begin planning. Well its not so much that it would be necessarily i...

Re: New here with questions
In short the ecospheres are bad news. A fully closed-off ecosystem simply doesn't work long term and only works short term because of how tough the shrimp are at enduring bad conditions. Here's a detailed account of why: http://www.petshrimp.com/opaeinfo.php However the supershrimp are not picky abo...

Ah, I might have babies around Christmas or New Years then (the former only if they laid the eggs a number of days before I noticed them).mcdaney wrote:It takes about a month (30 to 35 days) for the eggs to develop

Re: Keeping snails shells healthy (calcium)
My understanding is that so long as there is a source of calcium that will grow biofilm (and thus get grazed on) the snails will get what they need. Some people do nothing but put in egg shells. My MTSs have done fine with the limestone holey rock. If you do notice any shell problems you can always ...

Re: Progress updates
Well the girls still all have their eggs. Its interesting, a lot of the time I can't find them no matter how hard I look, but when one berried female comes out of hiding the others tend to appear about the same time. They seem to be on some kind of schedule only they know. So assuming my first sight...

Re: do you need a filter for a supershrimp tank?
This explains everything you need: http://www.petshrimp.com/opaesetup.php As for a direct answer, the general consensus here is that while a filter does not necessarily harm them (some people here do use filters) it isn't necessary either, and indeed may bother the shrimp to a degree. I know mine HA...

Re: Seamlessly & Safely Upgrading a Tank
That sounds good to me, but I should note that the moon sand actually needs less cleaning than normal sand, they pre-wash it or something. So if you have a free filter you may be able to get away with not washing it much at all, just putting it in the tank and running the filter until the water clea...

Re: Seamlessly & Safely Upgrading a Tank
I would think it should be safe to do the move quickly, since you are effectively moving a great deal of the good bacteria from the old tank to the new. It may even be better as it would reduce the number of times you have to put the shrimp under the stress of being moved. I know I've had success se...

Berries! Three berried females showed up this morning!
Goes to show how great supershrimp are, I still haven't gotten any eggs out of my freshwater shrimp.

Re: Opae's and guppies?!
Even if they could survive the salinity, the guppies need a lot more food than the supershrimp. It seems like a bad combination as you'd have to add the things the fish need but the shrimp don't, like a filter and heater. Not to mention the guppies would likely eat any baby shrimp.

Re: Larvae not surviving
The amount of hiding places created by the rocks, plus all the food from the algae certainly makes it seem possible to me that the babies simply are hiding out until they have grown a fair amount. Course by the same token the amount of spaces made by the rocks may explain why you haven't seen bodies...

Re: Larvae not surviving
Aku should confirm, but I'm assuming those are gradual temperature shifts as seasons change and the temperature in the building proceeds to change as well.jonesinfershrimp wrote:temp swings and the trace amount of ammonia possibly. why such a swing in temps?

Re: Larvae not surviving
How big is your tank? How many hiding places are there? Its possible the larva are simply metamorphosing and going into hiding until they have grown enough that you might not be able to tell them apart from smaller adults. If they were dying one would think you would have seen a body or two but then...

Re: live rock
Course said bacteria exists in the water and on the substrate too, filters just give a lot of extra surface area for them to grow.Mech wrote:I have the filter to house beneficial bacteria. Old habits lol.
