Re: White Opae???

One of the Opae with the thicker arms came to the surface and stayed for a while. I'm attaching the clearest shot I could get. It's the one farthest to the right.

Re: Integrating a new snail species?

They are trapdoor snails and they look like Tarebia granifera. They seem too dark to be Malaysian Trumpet Snails.

Re: White Opae???

COTIGIRL, I have checked my colonies of brilliant red Opae with a magnifier. Seems many have the thin "arms" for their claws, just like my pale ones. But some of the red appear to be "beefier" in the arms for the claws. And I wonder if they are M. Lohena? I believe my two colonie...

Re: Integrating a new snail species?

I have many MTS in my freshwater tank. But I have not acclimated any of them to my Opae tanks. I fear they would multiply way too much. I do have several Tarebia granifera from Mustafa in my Opae tanks. I only have them for about a month and I hope they do not breed excessively, like the MTS.

Re: White Opae???

They pale ones are definitely a variation because their claws are different. The pale ones have thin "arms" for their claws, more like their legs. The red ones have beefier claws, more like a lobster. I have a macro lens, but it would be difficult to capture the right comparison shots to s...

Re: White Opae???

In my case, I'd say 14 out of 16 are like that.

Re: A pic or two of my Opae Ula

The "algae" you show sprouting actually looks like live coral! The little crab is outstanding - what do you feed him?

Re: White Opae???

Here's another shot of two of the "white" Opae. Actually, they are clear.

White Opae???

I have my Supershrimp in a shared tank with other Opae. The Supershrimp have been in there for a little over three weeks and seem to be well acclimated. They constantly feed and I don't think any of them have died. But they have never come up to color. Using a magnifier, some have red spots that can...

Re: A pic or two of my Opae Ula

The live rock is interesting. I would think that live rock from an ocean environment would carry plant life that cannot be supported in brackish water. When that plant life dies, it will pollute the water. But I have a source that ships their Opae with live rock. So I would think that such live rock...

Re: A pic or two of my Opae Ula

The bookshelf tank geometry is awesome - a great showcase. And I'm hoping you fare well with your Opae. But I share Mustafa's concerns. Feeding, filtering, changing water may not have immediate effects. But most tanks, especially from my freshwater experience, do best when there's not too much going...

Optimal numbers of Opae per gallon

I am starting a second tank, which has a 1.25 gallon capacity. My current tank is 1/2 gallon and has 16 Opae. I'd like to know the optimal amount of shrimp per gallon, so that they will have adequate companionship but not be overcrowded.

Re: Feeding, filtering, water changes, etc.

Sounds good. If the larvae make it, then it would seem the water parameters are okay. I'll be curious as to what Mustafa might offer here. He did mention something in your other thread about excessive algae and a possible impending bacterial outbreak.

Re: Feeding, filtering, water changes, etc.

If you combine 250 Opae into one mass, they would make up a huge fish. So one mini wafer every other day certainly would not be overfeeding. But I think the issue is maintaining a careful balance so that the tank does not crash. Also, another indicator would be the ability to breed. If the tank has ...
