Re: Cherax destructor-yabbies
Here's a pic in the acclimating bucket: http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/4622/zoidberg.jpg His claw protruding from under the flower pot cave. http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/4622/zoidberg.jpg He's really tough to get a good shot of. I know some are very shy but I remain hopeful that he will wa...

Re: Cherax destructor-yabbies
I have some good news. First, the shipper will honor the DOA (although he did not need to) and will be sending me another female. Second, the male seems to be doing quite well. He is very shy but eats frozen peas and an ocassional sinking pellet. His cave has so much gravel pushed up to the opening ...

Re: Cherax destructor-yabbies
They arrived yesterday. One of them was DOA.
The survivor seems to be doing well. I believe it is a male and he is quite the goof. He hangs out near his flower pot cave and bulldozes gravel around. Seems like a fun life. Will try to get a pic of him when I'm home tonight.

Re: Puerto Rican Shrimp
I would certainly avoid M. carcinus and M. acanthurus in a tank with fish. Please post up images of your shrimp if you can.

Re: Cherax destructor-yabbies
Thanks again for the info Mustafa. I went with two blue moon Cherax (C. boesemani?) from a seller on aquabid. This being my first dance with crays, I didn't want to go too crazy with it. I have a 29 gallon tank set up for them. Hopefully, with enough hiding places, these guys will get along okay. Wi...

Cherax destructor-yabbies
Does anyone here know where I can get them? I'm looking to try something different than prawn and have an extra tank for them. They seem like extraordinary creatures.
Thanks in advance

Re: Need help identifying shrimp
If there is a female that is holding eggs, I would be curious to see how big the eggs are. If large, there is a chance that your prawn are a smaller species that reproduces entirely in freshwater. I know you said you don't want any more (understandably so) but being able to breed them is truly a rew...

Re: Need help identifying shrimp
After looking at your prawn's rostrum further, I want to lean away from it being an amazonicum. From what I've seen, their rostrum is usually a little more elongate. Sorry, this doesn't really help you as I haven't been able to provide a positive ID.

Re: Need help identifying shrimp
It's tough to say how big your prawn would get without knowing what species it is. If you've had it for about a year now and it's only 3", that's likely its max size. Amazon prawn, M. amazonicum get around 6" max size from what I've seen. It's tough to say what species prawn you have since...

Re: Need help identifying shrimp
That is a freshwater prawn (macrobrachium) of some sort. I want to lean toward it being M. amazonicum but hard to say until it grows more. They are very aggressive and not kind to fish, shrimp or even their own species. I would not try to add any other inhabitants to that tank. Case in point, I adde...

Re: Carnivorous ghost shrimp
It's not always easy to tell. If they are blue prawn (M. rosenbergii), the telltail signs are: typically larger claws, a red horn, faint stripes on their sides and larger eyes. (as said above) There may be other species mixed in and those can have color, behavior and shape differences from the commo...

Re: Quick vid of my prawn
I received him in a shipment of post larval prawn mid-November, so I'd say he's about four months old. Will post up more vids as he grows. I've seen conflicting information about rosenbergii life expectancy. Some have said a year, others a few years. Anyone know for sure? I was hoping this guy would...

Quick vid of my prawn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VbFd39htmg&list=UUmr6iZ45SxVX-lgNIK5uZhQ&index=2&feature=plcp Finally got a vid of this guy so I wanted to put it up here. He's one of a few rosenbergiis I have. At the moment, he is by himself in a smaller tank. Will need to upgrade the surroundings soon....
