Just wanted to thank everyone for the crushed coral suggestion; I have a pouch of it suspended in the water right next to the sponge filter, and after only about 24 hours in place, it has already raised my pH from 6.0 to 7.0. It's a bit of an eyesore, but for now my #1 priority is getting the water ...

Try aerating some tap water in a separate conatiner for 24 hours, then check the pH. It may be naturally acidic to begin with, treated by the water dept. to raise the pH, but unstable in the long run. Crushed coral in the tank, or in a filter, will raise pH to around 7.6, and buffer it as well. Tha...

my alkaline water is acidic x.x
Hrmmmm.... My tap water is alkaline, usually around 7.4 out of the tap. It is also soft, with dKh readings typically coming in between 1.5 and 2.5. Within this last week I set up a 10g RCS tank and have about a dozen or so RCS (from adults to juvies) in it. They all seem happy, swimming around, cons...

Honestly, I can't imagine any stores use lead anymore. The regulations (EPA, OHSA) that they would have to follow would be exhorbidently expensive to implement, monitor, and report. For example, if a store used real lead, then if some employee took a handful of them and tossed em in the regular garb...

FWIW, I've kept multiple ghost shrimp with a dwarf puffer for 6+ months now and he's never seemed the slightest bit interested in them. And it's not that he doesn't see them, he certainly does. Just isn't interested in them as food. Note that not all the ghosts were even full size; I've had ones as ...

views of my 10g RCS tank
Hi all, new to this, just finishing setting up my RCS tank (hopefully will become a breeding tank, we'll see), sharing this mostly because a lot of you gave me some great input that went into how I set this up. Getting my shrimp later this week so if you see any red flags in the tank right now, let ...

so indecisive about a substrate!
Normally I'm a pretty decisive type of person, but I'm really unsure right now what substrate I want for my soon-to-be-set-up 10g RCS-only tank. Heard enough stories about people not liking light substrates, so have ruled that out. So here are the other things I am considering. Advice from those who...

If you could find one, I would think a DP would eradicate your snail population pretty quickly. They have voracious appetites and are true hunters, so they will find any snails that are in there. Another non-chemical option would be to temporarily add a very small loach. In my 29g community tank I h...

Why ramshorns in shrimp tanks?
In browsing through the forum, I see a lot of references to people having ramshorn snails in their shrimp tanks, and I am a bit perplexed as to why. MTS make sense (especially with sand substrates), since they are good for substrate aeration and general cleanup, yet don't eat live plants at all. But...
