To start a new batch you can pull out some sand and dry it out, then rehydrate after a week or so. It is my understanding that branchiopods will have difficulty hatching in established water because there are too many micro-predators that will eat them as nauplii. Thats why I hatch in a new contain...

Sand?

I'm realizing that my dirt bottom tank is not so good for Triops if I ever want to see them. Also they keep it stirred up so well I cant even see the fairy shrimp half the time. I was thinking of some nice white sand from the pet store. Im only doing a 2 gallon tank so it wont require much. Here are...

Which "toy" microscope do you have? I have the Qx5. I took out the bulb underneath and the plastic diffuser, and I stick a 5 LED flashlight underneath. It really helps. I tried rigging something with a screw in fluorescent light bulb, but I just couldnt direct the light well enough. The f...

Does Ostracod look black all the time ? Because those in my picture are white. The micrograph does show a clam shape opening just like those in my picture. I guess you are right. Thank you very much. :D Mine only look dark under the microscope. That is due to the poor lighting and low resolution of...

to avoid any confusion, those snails in my pics are really, really small, like 5mm long. I take pics with a 7mp camera, then cut out around the snail. I dont resize the photo, so its the equivalent of looking at them under a microscope. If I posted the whole photo all you would see is a brown dot in...

I have no idea. The only plants available in the tank are these, and they seem to be ok. I rarely see the snails on the plants, they are most often on the walls of the tank.

I really need to spend some time with my camera. Even though this isnt a very good pic, I was shocked that it came out this good for a critter 3 mm long. Here is a pic of one of the scuds in my tank. http://www.iturnrocks.com/images/tanks/scud1.jpg And here is a shot of the plants that started growi...

I imagine my scuds are SOL. I have no rocks in this tank, it is a full dirt bottom. I have let this tank sit since the last time I hatched branchiopods in early spring. Its amazing that plants just appeared a couple months ago. I havent fed anything this whole time. There are literally thousands of ...

Scuds

I have an explosion of scuds from when I collected wild duckweed. Of course it is just an invert tank, but the last time I added baby triops and fairy shrimp they all disappeared. Im curious if anyone knows what scuds eat? Do you think they are clearing out my fairy shrimp? Im hoping this next batch...

Yes, those snails in your first pic are the ones to which I'm referring. Having dealt with them in the lab for a few years and at home for a year or so, I'm 99% certain they aren't the young of another kind of ramshorn. Unless they are some paedomrophic form, but even so, the way they carry their s...

Actually those are just babies. Although I do have some new ones that dont get very big at all. The ones pictured above get about 3/8 inch diameter. Here is a pic of an adult. I may have shown this pic before. This one had a broken shell, but made use of the hole. http://www.iturnrocks.com/images/ho...
