Odd shrimp death

I saw what appeared to be a pair of cherries mating on Friday night - belly to belly, lined up a bit off from parallel. Later however, the one that had been in its back (which I presumed to be the female) was STILL in that position, and its limbs were twitching weakly. There was a molt nearby. I fig...

I caught some of my crays in the act the other morning when I switched on the lights. They bolted, and I was afraid I "ruined the mood," but the female was carrying eggs later that day, so I didn't mess up the IMPORTANT part. :)

Nothin's still happenin'...

2-3 weeks ago, I noticed the first saddle in my batch of cherry shrimp. I've also notice they are molting fairly regularly, feeding well (to my eyes at least) and 3 or so others have saddled up. But...these later saddles are looking pretty sad. They're barely there compared to the first female that ...

Well, I used them... Judging from the carapace, "my" dwarf crays looked...well, more like cajuns than anything else. The rostrum wasn't quite so sharply tapered, but they were close. The wild-caught ones I obtained recently had HUGE "horns" on either side of the rostrum. I flippe...

I dug the episodes of Spongebob Squarepants that featured the one-eyed (anatomically correct!) cyclopoid villain Plankton.

What I've read of their ecology suggests that, as well - it seems they thrive best in temporarily flooded pools and oxbows. The water chemistry values would change rapidly in such habitats.

At the moment, YP, it looks like a digital photo of my crays won't be happening any time soon. Fate is against me, here. In the meantime, is there any way you can scan some of those pics? I CAN get a cray under a magnifier.

I mentioned it in your other thread- your "plant" looks like Chara. It's a FW macroalgae.

Wow...the "plant" looks like Chara . Haven't seen any of that in years. The snails are definitley Physa or Physella. In my experience, they don't do any real damage to plants unless food is an issue. They're a great cleanup crew. It looks like you have some of what I call "blonde"...

Life is a nasty business.

BTW, the males of some fish seem to be able to supress growth in other males, as well.

Also: California was willing to work with hobbyist breeders back in the 70's/80's, as far as pupfish go, but most of them failed to deliver what was promised (breeding reports, etc). This used up most of the govt's "good will" toward the home-aquarium sector, so you'd better be attached to...

The only problem would be "invisible shrimp." My 10 gal cherry tank has one piece of driftwood COVERED with Java fern. It contains 18 shrimp (no more losses after the first two - whew!), but it's rare to see more than 6 at any time. A thick layer of leaf litter would likely produce the sam...

For years, I've used nothing but a bare tank bottom. Some Java moss, Java fern, and/or hornwort provides cover. I'll add driftwood if it still looks too sparse. It's much easier to clean and makes it easy to control MTS. Throw in some leaf litter for munchies/refuge. My cherries and crays seem to li...
