I wish my water was that green. Maybe algae dont like compact fluorescents.

I get the stuff that grows on the walls, but my water stays clear.

I spoke to a friend from University of Nebraska. He said the biology class regularly takes water samples from a bird bath on the campus and finds hydra, daphnia, rotifers, algae.

Yes, the ostracod always seems to show up dark under my microscope, probly because it is a crap microscope. Heres a pic I took with my digital camera. The ostracod is on the stick in front of the Triops. It looks like a little clam. http://www.iturnrocks.com/images/hometank/inverts/tadpoleshrimp/012...

Further note- At first I confused seed shrimp (Ostracods) with clam shrimp. Seed shrimp do resemble tiny clams, but they dont grow as large as clam shrimp and their shells (the ones I have) are not as transparent. Clam Shrimp

I finally hatched some clam shrimp. Here are some photos I took with the QX5 today. I used a variety of lighting to increase my chances of some better pics. These pics are at 60x. I cropped the images in photoshop to reduce file size and cut out some of the blank background. QX5 stock top light http...

Why worrying about Hydra? I believe the worrying party was concerned that the Hydra would trap and eat baby shrimp. I personally only keep ephemeral pool inverts and enjoy watching Hydra catch and eat other inverts. I would think that any snail that would eat Hydra would also eat your baby shrimp, ...

I asked a question to someone who might know (with the intention of wondering if Hydra eggs might stick to the glass on an auqarium or perhaps the substrate of a tank): I was wondering if a hydra egg can attach to a plant stem or if they always just fall to the bottom of the pool. Julian Cremona, He...

Fairy Shrimp Territorial Behavior

in my little tank, i have 2 male Spinytail fairy shrimp. While watching them last night, I saw the larger one target the smaller one and bang heads just like goats or rams do. Its interesting to see such a primitive creature doing something so complex. I have observed similar behavior in the past by...

I havent seen any hydra for a few years now. I have some green single stem things that stick off the side of my tank, but I assume its some kind of algae. Sometimes when Im watching really close it looks like they move, but it could just be a current caused by a fairy shrimp swimming by.

Just did a quick search and found this: Hydra reproduce in the summer months. Most reproduction is asexual involving a process termed budding, in which a new hydra develops as a bud from the parent column (see species illustration). Buds later break free, but are genetically identical to the parents...

I had hydra in one of my fairy shrimp hatches. I havent seen any for a while, but it was very interesting to watch them catch tiny critters. All the ones I saw were attached to the walls of the aquarium, but then the largest animals in the tank were fairy shrimp, and I doubt a hydra would be success...

I would think any parasites attached to an invertebrate would be removed upon a successful molt.

For removing leeches from turtles, i soak them in tap water. I imagine that would have bad results for something breathing with gills however.
