Re: Macroalgae Red-brown Growth

Possibly find a good-sized piece of cork at a local hobby shop and trim it to size to fit the top of your jar? It'd probably be more aesthetic than a sheet of acrylic. FWIW after just setting the lid on my jar - not screwing it down at all - has reduced the number of times I've had to top it off fro...

Re: More floaters!

Well there were obviously some I had missed, because I have seen half a dozen "brand new" little Opae in just the last couple of days, not from the batch I posted about a couple months ago! Either someone popped babbies while I wasn't paying attention, or I missed quite a few. They're so t...

Re: My mossball is floating

He finally got over his youthful exuberance "floating" phase and has settled down into a nice mature "sitting on the bottom" phase after about two weeks. Hopefully if anyone else has floating mossballs, they can find this thread and find some solutions. (I also saw in another thr...

Re: Discovered A New Brackish Water Plant!

I for one would be willing to risk it, they are such an elegant-looking algae! Plus I've had worse luck in other hobbies, so I'm willing to take a higher risk than others probably.

Re: Newbie with Two Tanks

The snails that Mustafa sells are pretty hardy, like the shrimp. I have the same handful of snails in my tank that I had when I started it, they've been growing slowly, and I am pretty sure there are a couple baby snails in there now as well. I rarely put food in the tank, and they are happy grazing...

Re: 1 white eye

I will always defer to experts, but they aren't "vastly different" from the little freshwater shrimp as they are in the same phylogenetic family. It makes them second cousins or thereabouts. So you can more or less extrapolate from what you might see in Neocaridina/Caridina freshwater shri...

Re: Newbie with Two Tanks

I recently posted a thread about "Can my tank be TOO clean?" and the replies came back as "if the shrimp are good, your tank is good." Your comment "I have seen lots of molts of the shrimp." is a good sign. Perhaps feed them even less than you are, you could be contamin...

My mossball is floating

See: title. I know that occasionally marimo can develop bubbles inside, plus this guy is pretty tiny, but he started floating as soon as I put him in the tank which was about a week and a half ago. I'm hesitant to try to squish it to release any bubbles, but I kinda want it on the substrate... Keep ...

Re: Ready to set up a tank - any recommendations?

Almost exactly my setup, so you should do quite well! My only suggestion - don't overcrowd it. Go easy on the fake plants as you're going to have lots of rocks and whatnot in there for hiding spaces and decoration. You want the shrimp to be the highlight. Your macroalgae, if it winds up anything lik...

Re: Thorax color

It's probably the difference between females carrying spawn and males not. Whenever the ones with the darker "saddle" decide to molt next, they should descend and they'll carry eggs. It doesn't always seem to happen, but with mine, it's definitely related to egg production.

More floaters!

I kind of hate to keep making new threads just to gush over my jar, but I'm just so pleased with it. On Mustafa's advice, I finally pulled a huge chunk of the macroalgae out of the jar to give other micro-flora and -fauna a shot to get better established. I also dropped in the algae ball I ordered a...

Re: Can my jar be TOO clean?

However, before you increase feeding try to reduce the size of your macroalgae lump by 70-90%. That alone may give the other algae a better chance at competing with it. The macroalgae is a nutrient sponge. This is on my shortlist of maintenance things for the jar. I have been pestering friends to s...

Can my jar be TOO clean?

I've had my Opae Ula jar for about 10 months now, and everyone seems happy and healthy - I've even got babies and another mommy with eggs. But I worry that there's not _enough_ food in the tank for them to be as happy and healthy as possible. I'll attach a very recent photo of the tank, the water is...

Re: Restocking an old tank

That pH sounds high, even for Opae Ula. I don't know what the range is for them to be healthy, but I had my freshwater tank spike up to 7.8 and it sadly killed off some of the less hardy species I had in there. (I never did figure out why, I had used distilled water to fill and top it off, all the o...
