Re: My success story
First a confession, then answer to the above questions. I noticed the banded female is once again carrying eggs--what is this, the 4th or 5th time in less than a year? Now the confession. Once I noticed her I could not (decided not to) resist the urge to count. There are 12 berried shrimp I can see....

Re: My success story
I still think it is because I used a substrate with lots of organic material--hermit crab substrate. I had to deal with ammonia at first, but it gave the algae/biofilm a big head start. This resulted in the shrimp population expanding rapidly. Now the shrimp numbers are great enough to sustain the a...

I agree--very cool. Where did you get it?Ace wrote:You don't know just how much I want some of that white skeleton you have. It's really very interesting.

Re: Spouse wants office shrimp too - how best to make it a surprise?
Sounds reasonable to me. As long as the portage is short so things don't dry out. Depending on the substrate, if the water sloshes around enough there might be a time required for settling.

Re: Spouse wants office shrimp too - how best to make it a surprise?
If I understand the process, you will use water and substrate from an established tank to seed a second tank. I'm not understanding the part about emptying the second tank prior to transport. Why not just set up the second tank once, in the office where it's headed? Maybe that's what you are saying....

Re: White small organisms found near water surface
Hello Edwin, The image is a little fuzzy on my monitor, but they do not appear to be shrimp larvae. Larvae don't wiggle, they mainly rise and fall slowly in the water column. They do, however, tend to rise to the top when the light is on--they are positive phototropic. And, they are red-ish with a v...

Re: My success story
I just took another look at the tank, and there are 2 more berried shrimp that were shy, making 6.

Re: My success story
My pleasure. This adventure has been exactly what I was looking for--no muss, no fuss, fun and fascinating to watch, animals doing their thing. This proves that Mustafa's method works, IMO. A newly berried female appeared this afternoon, giving me four again. The temperatures are warming up a little...

Re: Am I stressing my shrimp out?
I have 2 grandsons who love to tap on the tank to 'make the shrimp move'--they do, with a few 'popcorning' around. Some will go white, but they are back to red within the hour.
If I bump the tank once or twice inadvertently it does not seem to bother them.

Re: My success story
New tank pic.jpg I'm still using just a phone camera. The algae is washed out. It is actually a medium green color. The shrimp congregate at the top of the tank in the cool mornings to warm up. One of the females released larvae the other day, so I'm down to three berried females currently. The lar...

Re: My success story
Thanks Ace. The tank temperature in the mornings has been a little cooler--between 65 and 66 degrees lately, even running the space heater in the room. But since it is well above the 60 degrees Mustafa mentions, I'll not worry. I'll post a pic soon. The decoration is unremarkable, but the shrimp are...

Re: My success story
Two berried females appeared over the weekend--for a total of 4 in the tank currently. 2 have small clutches, maybe 6 or 8 eggs. The other 2 are 12 to 15 or so. It's been cold enough that we've been running a small space heater occasionally in the room (our bedroom), so the room temperatures have no...

Re: My success story
No feeding. It is coming up on 4 years (in April) with no food added to the system. The substrate is still 95% covered with algae. I've not noticed any great decrease in algae coverage this year. The sides of the tank have remained algae free since the algae sheets came off a while ago. It seems the...

Re: My success story
I've been paying attention to the temperature parameters. The room temp varies from 66 to 70 degrees (October, November, December), depending on the warmth of the day, always coolest in the morning--usually about 67 to 68 degrees. The tank varies from 66 to 68 degrees in the morning, before the ligh...

Re: My success story
The last clutch was small--only 8 or so larvae. They are mostly benthic now, but took a little longer, 5 or 6 weeks to become so. The other two berried shrimp seem happy enough, but no new ones have shown yet. I'm happy, though, because I've not had reproduction this late in the year. Hope everyone ...
