The portuguese word for oak is "carvalho." Pick up dry, brown carvalho leaves off the ground, soak them in water for two or three days, and put them in your shrimp tank. The shrimp seem to like it.

They would be sharing a tank with red cherry shrimp and various kinds of snails. I'm pretty sure that the place is bursting at the seams with peace, love and vegetarianism.

I've read that freshwater amphipods like gammarus and hyalella eat blue-green algae. (http://www.bcadventure.com/adventure/an ... rimp.phtml) Anyone know if they are any good at controlling BGA in aquariums?

If a female shrimp has to molt just before mating, I wonder if it's even physically possible for her to keep old sperm from getting shucked off with her old exoskeleton.

They both belong to the phylum arthropoda, so they're distantly related. Trilobites are placed in a class of their own, and triops are placed as an order within the class crustacea. Their body plan has remained essentially unchanged for 300 million years. http://www.answers.com/topic/notostraca-1

It's a definite possibility. :( That's why I think that Mustafa's efforts at promoting the sale of only captive-bred shrimp are so important.

According to Mustafa, on another thread: The problem is that shrimp that are not all that easy to breed in captivity like the Amano shrimp are not even farm raised. They occur naturally in Taiwan and are probably collected in huge quantities. Same applies to most imported shrimp, be it from China, I...

The impression I came away with from my ghost shrimp, was that sometimes they just felt like tasting a little fresh meat, but not if there was a chance that the "fresh meat" might fight back.

They look beautiful to me too.

I don't know why, but I have always liked the idea of naming new varieties of shrimp after food or drink, like "cherry" shrimp. How about "brownie" shrimp, or "mocha" shrimp, or "cola" shrimp?

if they stay in your tank it means you have very good water quality. I don't know if the presence of cyclops in a tank necessarily means that the water quality is good. I'm a high school science teacher. I have a 10 gal tank in my class that's supposed to have just algae, plankton, and snails. It h...

Eww. I hadn't thought of that. The flatworms in my tank are the tiny white ones (2mm max), and I bet a lot of them get eaten by the adult shrimp. But if their numbers take off again, I may consider actively removing them.

Is it really necessary to eliminate every last flatworm from a shrimp tank? A while back my shrimp tank had a massive population explosion of flatworms. I cut way back on the feeding, and their numbers went down, but I still can find a few on the glass if I look for them. They don't seem to be causi...
