Re: Finally!

Congrats J

My berried females mostly stay hidden. Every once in awhile I'll see one or two come out and then disappear to the back of the tank where all the lava rock is. The babies just appear free floating around.

Re: Bitten by the Shrimp-keeping Bug

Just my 2 cents: You have a lot of algae in there. Don't feed. While "others" when given more food may help to increase breeding it's not that way with Opae Ula. Everything here on the care is the correct way to raise the opae. If there were food to feed you would also find it in the shop....

Re: Salinity, Nitrates - Can’t Keep Macroalgae Alive

Do you have any pics of your tank? If I were to guess I would say that your algae is not getting enough nutrients. The alage feeds off the waste from the opae. If you don't feed like most of us do there's only so much left in the tank for your alage to survive on. I know when there's too much macro ...

Re: Tank maintenance

Keep in mind that if there are microscopic particles the shrimp can eat those too since they do filter feed as well.

Re: Upcoming Move - 1 Week - 9 Hour Drive

If you think about how hardy these opae are I doubt you wil have any isses at all if you transport them in their current tank. Just lower the water & you should be fine.

Re: Upcoming Move - 1 Week - 9 Hour Drive

Do you think there will be an amonia spike after disrupting the tank? Maybe you would be better off tranfering the opae to another jar by themselves. Once you get to MI test the water. If alls well just add them back in.

Re: Tank maintenance

But what happens to all the particles that rub away from Mr. Earser? Goes right back into your tank. If it were me I wouldn't use it.

Re: A year later and no babies.

While new blood has great intentions only opae ula from the same island & genes can breed together. You should stick with what Mustafa has and purchase back from him. This means opae from Maui can only breed with ones from Maui, Big Island with Big Island and so on.

Re: What Is the Highest Temperatures Baby Opae Ula Can Withstand?

It's hard to imagine that went into hiding. All but 4 were now visible. It is possible. Tank is covered there's no way any contaminants got in there. I cannot confirm that they died as it's too difficult to find the babies if they floated to the bottom of the tank. It has too much algae in it. On a ...

Re: What Is the Highest Temperatures Baby Opae Ula Can Withstand?

I don't think they are in the benthic stage or hiding. All the babies were various ages. Is anyone here successful with their tanks with temps in the low 80's? For months they were out in the open. As they matured new ones appeared.

Re: What Is the Highest Temperatures Baby Opae Ula Can Withstand?

The adults are fine. It's all the baby opae that are no longer there. There's only 4 left swimming around. I've had temps higher thean 88 degrees but there were never any babies present. This is what it looked like on Monday

What Is the Highest Temperatures Baby Opae Ula Can Withstand?

One of my tanks lost almost off of the baby opae ula sometime between Monday & Tuesday. Outside temps here were up to 34c/93 degrees. My tank went from 23c/73 degrees to about 27c/81 degrees. I had a least 80 babies in that tank & counted only 4 last Wednesday night. Can I assume this was du...

Re: New shrimp

@Varanus I didn't know that. Good to know. I think it's good to just figure out what works best for you. I have a quart & half gallon jar that I keep near a window. I feed a few times at the begining to jump start it and to give the algae a food souce which was the shrimps waste. Other than that...

Re: New shrimp

The Opae Ula come in several different colors. Some may be white, pink, red, orange, yellow, or striped white/red, pink/white. I believe when stressed the colors can get duller but should come back. I don't think you can get the shrimp to get any redder than it originally is. Make sense? Red vs. Pin...
