I used to keep fiddler crabs in a 55 gal. I created an air cave at the bottom by inverting a fish bowl and placing a heavy rock on top, then running an air line inside. The bowl would fill up with air and the crabs would go inside and sit, while being a foot under water. Ive found that crayfish enjo...

Im with you on that. I had a 5 gal bucket of dirt earlier this year. Just got a $100 order from some guy in Germany, so I may need to restock soon.

Im pretty sure fairy shrimp need a dry or freezing spell to induce hatching, but I could be wrong. You could just hatch a new batch every couple months and add to your existing tank. I havent observed fairy shrimp laying behavior- I think I read they keep the eggs until they die. If so, you could sc...

Detritus basically contains algal and protozoan cysts. This is the first food Triops will eat after hatching. Once you put algae in water and add light, you shouldnt need to keep adding it, it should grow like crazy. Also, once your Triops are big enough to transfer to a larger tank, they are probab...

Thanks Neonshrimp, the info was very helpful. For reference, the Intel Play/Digital Blue Computer microscope, models QX3 and QX5 are suppost to be very good and affordable. Is it possible to put a live specimen under a microscope? If so, how would you go about doing that? -John I have a QX5 and I c...

All Triops (Triops genus) from the US are currently considered Triops Longicaudatus, but scientists are working on splitting them up into as many as 10 distinct species. Ive been told that mine have characteristics of populations from both California and Mexico.

So far I havent done extensive research on this, but..... I have hatched Triops with water boiled for 10 minutes. I have hatched Triops with rain water. I have hatched Triops with Tap water that I let sit for a week. I have hatched Triops with bottled drinking water. All of these waters have the pot...

Just an update. I got some native dried up pond dirt from a member here, iturnrocks, and the soil is WAY better for raising triops than any of the Triassic triops kits you see for sale. Just a note in case anyone missed it. The dirt badflash got was not only for raising Triops in, but also containe...

I believe someone put forth the idea that its better to feed an unwanted animal to another than to just kill it. If you squish something and toss it outside, you will be feeding other animals- such as any scavenger that eats dead stuff. You would have to incinerate it or bag it up really good to kee...

The high death rate may be more from the transfer to a different temp of water, or too long of storage without enough oxygenation, rather than abrasion on the net. Ive seined thousands of fish, with only 1 or 2 kills from gilling the net, but then I usually lose 10-20 in transport.

My tank left outside, stayed outside and I guess was frequently updated with insect larvae so I had 3 survive to adulthood.

Ive had 3 generations of triops just by draining the tank when the last one dies, drying the substrate for about a month, then re-adding new distilled. I did that once. After the second time, I drained the tank and put it outside. Eventually it rained into the 10 gallon and filled up, and I had a ne...
