Question about babies and lights at night

History: I have a 10 gallon supershrimp tank on my desk in my home office. I started with about 65 shrimp in June of 2017. Everything has been going fine: Molting, algae, active shrimp, snails (nerites and MTS), and berried shrimp. I haven't put any food in the tank at all since I set it up. Over th...

Re: Has anyone done a huge 50 gallon tank?

Thanks Mustafa. I'm sure it will be awhile before I go that route, but I'll definitely post about it if I do.

Re: Questions for the Experts!

Thanks for the reply AnotherKevin. I appreciate it.

Filtered seawater from an aquarium shop sounds like a nice way to go. (I'm in the lazy boat myself.)

Has anyone done a huge 50 gallon tank?

Eventually my freshwater cichlid tank will die and I don't want more cichlids. Has anyone put supershrimp in a "huge" 50 gallon tank?

I'm wondering what the pros/cons are of going really big like that.

Re: Questions for the Experts!

You put Nerite snails in your brackish tank? Yep. I have one tiger nerite and two zebras in there. If you go this route just be aware that they lay eggs everywhere. They are great algae eaters and don't breed in freshwater or brackish. But I did see a post on another forum that the eggs will hatch ...

Re: Questions for the Experts!

I started with a 10 gallon too. I bought 50 from another site. When I took a picture and counted the shrimp in my tank I had about 65. They all went in at once and I've had no issues. One problem with starting a 10 gallon with so few shrimp is that you'll get a lot of algae, depending on your lighti...

Re: Play dough in tank. Help

I would redo it. Why take the chance? You'll lose a week of time maybe. Some biofilm should be in the water by now and on the surfaces and substrate. Speaking for myself, if I didn't redo it, I'd always be wondering if it caused an issue down the road. 3-6 months later I'll be wishing I had just red...

Re: Adding my own snails?

I got some MTS from Petco/Petsmart for free from the freshwater tanks and just dumped them into my tank. I tried with one first and he did fine. Then I dumped in the others. Same thing with nerites. I bought them from a freshwater tank and dumped them in with no acclimation. They also did fine. At t...

Re: New and Need Suggestions

I had a 10-gallon kit from Petco/PetSmart. I used it for a planted freshwater shrimp tank until the hood lights burned out. I replaced the hood with a piece of clear 1/8" acrylic from Lowes or Home Depot (don't remember). Then I got a "NICREW ClassicLED aquarium light" 20 inch from Am...

Re: Anyone willing to lend me a snail?

There are different types of nerite snails. Will any work in a brackish tank? I have 1 tiger nerite and 2 zebra nerites in my shrimp tank. It's 10 gallon. Shoot, can you think of anything I can add that does? I've been removing the bits with tweezers as I see them, but it's been an ongoing battle s...

Re: Anyone willing to lend me a snail?

Snails typically don't eat hair algae. The best way to get rid of it is to buy a set of stainless steel "planted aquarium tools." Amazon has them. The 3-piece set has curved tongs, straight tongs, and a curved scissor. I had a ton of hair algae in my tank from the marimo that I started wit...

Re: New Setup: Plants Question

I used to have a freshwater planted shrimp tank and I grew to hate it. At first, I thought it was great that everything was growing so well, but then it got to be a real pain. I was in there all the time trimming plants and removing hair alqae. My supershrimp tank (10 gallon) is great because I don'...

Re: Planted tank?!

I say forget it all together. I'm not sure how you'd exactly mimic their natural environment. Some kind of two tank system where you're adding CO2 to water in a second tank then mimicking a daily ebb and flow of the tides? That sounds like a lot of work for animals that are perfectly happy to sit on...

Re: Micro unknown creatures detected

I have them in my tank too. They're harmless. Mine are super small, barely visible, I'd say about .25 mm to .5 mm, maybe less. They swim in a jerky motion. Stop on the glass for a few seconds. Then jerky swim away. I looked them up years ago and identified them at that time, when I had a freshwater ...

Re: Extra Support on Tank Floor?

"When placing stones on bed, a PVC or acrylic glass panel of at least 1/8" thick should be fitted over the base pane to prevent cracking" I read that too. But I also read that it's more of a precaution and definitely not necessary. The main concern is the heavy rocks will scratch the...
