That is exciting!
I wouldn't rely on a filter in that situation. It wouldn't be able to remove the toxins. But this shouldn't be an issue. You would surely have the shrimmpies out before disturbing the sand that far down.

Re: First Tank
They will always molt. A water change can cause molting. For this reason it is advised to do small water changes when keeping freshwater shrimp. It can be disruptive to breeding.
Sexing is a mystery, unfortunately.
As for the overgrowth you are having, it would help to cut down the lighting hours.

Ken While the super sharp crystals look nice, you may eventually see some degradation. I don't know really. I'm just guessing. I wouldn't think there would be much degradation. It would be an interesting experiment. CakeLake Substrate depth is a controversial subject. There are pluses and minuses to...

Is it not a red purple coralline algea ? That coloration seems like it is just on the surface.
I used pumice. It is very porous and has tremendous surface area for bacteria.

Here are aragonite samples. With the inclusion of just one crystal, you could just about have any sand or rocks that you wanted. You could do away with all of the usual items that are used with Opae Ula. A carpet of all the same form and color of aragonite formations could be striking.

Plant wise, the only thing that comes to mind, other than what Mustafa has, would be caulerpa prolifera. There is also turtle grass but it requires a very deep substrate. I am just tying to come up with anything that is different. For example, people usually use lava rock of which the usual red or b...

Re: My First Tank
If that is live rock, when you lower the salenity much of the life it has will die. That would cause some water guality issues. Live rock may not be suitable for Opae Ula. You may also want to avoid using red colors in their habitat since they are red and would not show so nicely against it. Aragoni...

Re: In need of advice!!
It is important that you allow the new space to sit for a month or so to allow it to not only cycle but to start growing algea. When you start to see green, you can move the shrimp into it. To encourage algae to grow, try and expose it to direct sunlight and you could have some lamps shining on it 2...
