Re: Seamlessly & Safely Upgrading a Tank

Wow, thanks for the tips you guys! I don't have access to R/O water, so distilled from the supermarket will have to do. The sand actually arrived today, so I may attempt the move tonight. I'll let you know how it goes. I was so sad to lose so many little dudes due to a contaminant (totally realized ...

Re: RED Malawa shrimp! :)

Me too! If my new, larger & upgraded shrimp tank is doing well by the time the weather warms back up again, I'd love to order 5 Malawa shrimp from you (although I'd be happy with any variety).

Re: Seamlessly & Safely Upgrading a Tank

Thanks! My CaribSea Tahitian Moon fine gravel arrives on Wednesday, so I'll be attempting the move on Thursday. Another question: What is the best way to clean the fine gravel, and everything else? I accidentally contaminated my tank not too long ago and lost 5 shrimp, and I'd like to avoid the same...

Re: Accidental 1-Gal Planted Tank

Also, how much should I be feeding 5 shrimp? I've been giving them a tiny fraction of a sinking pellet every 2 or 3 days, and a chunk of zucchini (mostly for the nerite) maybe once or twice a week.

Re: Found a dead shrimp, should I be worried?

Yeah...I was so surprised and sad when I had 5 shrimp randomly die about a month ago, because I had lurked on the discussion forum for months and thought I had done everything right. Pretty sure it is because I may have had some residual cleaning chemical on my hands when I went to adjust the heater...

Re: Accidental 1-Gal Planted Tank

I definitely over-did the water changes and lost a couple shrimp afterwards. The bio-load is very low (one nerite died and I am switching the other between this tank and the opae ula tank), and they seem to be much happier with smaller water changes every 2 weeks, which is what I've been doing! I've...

Seamlessly & Safely Upgrading a Tank

Hello forum! It's been a while! Good news: every single unaffected shrimp survived following my emergency water change, and they had all been doing VERY well until one recently got stuck in a molt. He is dying :( The rest are all bright red and picking around, very happy. I don't feed them or do muc...

Re: Found a dead shrimp, should I be worried?

Not that my tank is well established by any means, but it had been doing VERY well following my emergency water change. Just recently, I've had a shrimp who is stuck in a molt, and is dying. So sad about this because every single one survived after I took emergency measures, and now this :( I think ...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Update! I have counted at least 8 survivors all visible at once. They are all back to deep red and picking around, after hiding for about a week after the 75% emergency water change. It looks like everyone else pulled through! The "stricken" ones did all die, including Ruby, my favorite Ec...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

The remaining shrimp seem to be doing fine, and are settling down after the big water change. One molted! The 'stricken' shrimp are still not dead, but really don't look like they've improved, either. I guess I'll just wait and see, and take them out if they die. I'll be much more careful about maki...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Even if they are mostly just on their backs, swimmerets extendended and twitchy? I'd be very surprised if they make a comeback from this. And, there are so many crevices in the tank that I worry I won't be able to extract them if they die. That said, my favorite EcoSpherian, Ruby, who was the least ...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Any tips for the quarantined sick shrimp? I have them in a Pyrex bowl with clean water and a small lava rock. They really seem to just be dying slowly, though one of them has been twitching around for a few days now (the initial "stuck" one). There are no more "sick" ones since t...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

I didn't really rinse the heater before I put it in, and my hands were clean enough. I don't think I had anything harmful on them? Would that do something like this? Not rinsing the heater (it came in a completely sealed package)? Some shrimp did like to hang out on it. No one else touches these guy...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Hey there Mustafa! Thanks for the infos! Any idea why my shrimp are dying now? Ways in which my tank is not exactly to your setup: 1) a Marimo moss ball (not dying, still looks great) 2) I had added a 10w heater - it kept the tank a constant 78-80F, I have since removed it 3) No snails (nerite went ...

Re: New Tank - Diatoms vs. Green Algae

Well, for now, I have the test strips. I can bring a sample of the water to my LFS tomorrow for testing. I already did the 75% water change, and added the Prime. Is there anything else I could do for now? I'd love to have a larger tank, but my lack of space is the reason I bought the EcoSphere in th...
