Re: My latest (7th) Opae Ula tank
Very cool! I have a "thing" for glass spheres, as you might be able to see from one of my two tanks. (I also keep a marimo in a jar with a spherical cork lid next to it.) I had to re-do this tank, so it has just started cycling. No shrimp live in there yet. It's five gallons.

Re: Transferring Eco- sphere shrimp
Cool tank! Looks good.
Yes, I'd gently dump all the water from the ecosphere into the new digs.

Does this look like hair algae?
I put some chaeto algae that was purchased from this site into my newish tank. After a while, though, I saw that a different type was growing. It's finer, less wiry, and tends to anchor to surfaces, unlike the free-floating chaeto. Is this hair algae on the left? (I've contrasted it with the chaeto ...

It looks really cool. And I have rock envy over the big white one.

Re: Moving
Yes, I'd drain it down to a few inches (but obviously keep the water) and take out anything that can move, like rocks. But if you have some chaeto algae or something similar they could hold onto for the ride, I'm sure they'd appreciate it. I moved a tank and I put the whole thing in a big box and st...

Yes, I was going for a "lost city/underwater cult" kind of vibe.

Re: Tank set-up - rookie
I'm glad you have a happy survivor! One suggestion: These shrimp love having rocks/seashells/tank-safe decorations to explore and hide under, and your new tank is a bit barren. When you get "friends" for your shrimp, they're more likely to breed if they feel comfortable in the tank and hav...

Re: Ready to set up a tank - any recommendations?
I'd get at least a gallon tank. Something that small seems a bit cruel, and a one-gallon tank doesn't take up much more space than a half gallon. Also, it's not as sensitive as a smaller tank. Two gallons is even better. Also, give your shrimp plenty of places to hide out. They feel comfortable that...

Re: Cloud layer?
Wow, I'm cycling a tank and just had the same thing happen! It's cloudy on the bottom and crystal clear on top. I don't have any shrimp in there yet, just snails. So weird! I guess I'll stir it and see what happens.

My two tanks: both 5 gallons, but with very different looks
I've had a traditionally shaped tank for a few years and have had a lot of success in expanding my shrimp population. The decor is "natural." I recently got a new glass globe tank (actually a beverage dispenser) and decorated it in a more whimsical way. It has just started cycling. I put s...

Re: Our Petshrimp Project
Great project for a kid! I've helped both my kids with tanks, although they're in their early 20s. :) I'd make one suggestion if you're looking to get babies: Pile up some lava rocks to create little dark nooks and crannies for them to hide in. They are less stressed when they can get out of the lig...
