Re: New tank algae

Here's an option. Just pay for shipping and I'll send you water seeded with algae from my tanks. You figure maybe a half gallon or quart? That is if you're here in the U.S. Just a thought. Or you can go to your local fish store and get their salt water amd then mix it. IMG_0719.JPG 5.5 gal.jpg IMG_1...

Re: Feeding the algae instead of the shrimp

The algae looks like it's doing well. Rocks look great with a slight green to them.

Re: Starvation Prevention

Do you have pics of the brackish algae?

CLARIFICATION
Keep in mind that I did NOT add the miracle grow directly to the tanks that have opae in them. I completely removed the algae first to a separate bucket all by itself.

Re: Starvation Prevention

Here's an example. One of my tanks with the macroalgae from Petshrimp. For some reason the macroalgae on the left looks a bit greenish brown. I haven't felt like removing it. I did add some in this tank that was fed nutrients. It's much greener. The bunch on the right side used to be just as green b...

Re: Starvation Prevention

I do but not in the opae tank. I use it on the macroalgae. I pull it out and stick it in a bucket by itself. I add a little Miracle Grow to it and leave it there for a week. Pull it out & rinse it and then back into the opae tank. The macroalgae will turn a dark green. I think this is due to the...

Re: Starvation Prevention

I raise daphnia for my fish. The daphnia are fed green water. Green water is a generic term for water with suspended algae or euglena . Euglena are small single cell critters that share traits of both plants and animals. They are eaten by larger animals up the food chain. In order to keep the green ...

Re: Starvation Prevention

I'm really curious about this. If you start with a new tank/jar shouldn't you want to feed it a few times at the begining for a jump start? Here's my reasoning. What will the algae feed upon. It needs waste from either the snails or opae to get started. If there's no waste what will the algae feed o...

Re: Tank Setup -- General Questions

I would have not used any tap water unless you're in Hawaii. Would only use 100% RO or distilled. Here in California there's a lot of minerals in our water so I went completely 100% distilled. No marimo unless it's from Petshrimp and no java fern. Make sure your sand is completely washed and sterili...

Re: Growth in tank

Looks like a lot of hair algae. Not olny on the bottom but also the glass. Dud you use tap water or distilled water? How old is your set up?
